How to find an in-home caregiver in California City

California City covers 203 square miles of eastern Kern County, so the most useful line in any posting is where exactly the home is: a cross street and the distance from California City Boulevard. A caregiver deciding whether to apply will look at that before the rate. Census figures for 2020–2024 show why so many families here need outside help. A third of households (33.6%) include someone 65 or older, 747 older householders live by themselves, and 46.8% of residents over 65 report a disability. Working-age adults commute a mean 43.3 minutes, so the daytime hours are the ones families most often cannot cover.

Caregivers who apply may live in town, in Mojave (about 16 road miles away) or farther out, so mention whether you will pay for mileage. With 29.2% of residents using Spanish at home, mention your parent's preferred language too. When a relative has Medi-Cal, check IHSS with Kern County before settling on a private budget: the county can authorize paid hours, and the person you choose, including a family member, can be the provider.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in California City

The checks that exist locally are the ones you ask the applicant to show. An IHSS provider has passed the county's Live Scan background check and in-person orientation. The state's Home Care Aide Registry is searchable online; anyone working through an agency must be on it, and independent caregivers can join if they choose. A CNA certificate from CDPH matters if the job includes transfers, catheter care or wound dressing. After that, the judgment is yours: phone at least two past employers, hold the interview where your parent lives, with your parent joining in, and pay for a trial day. CaregiverConnect itself screens and vets no one and runs no background checks. If you want one, hire a consumer-reporting agency and get the applicant's signed consent first.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of California City are you in, and how many minutes is our street from you?
  • Would you drive my mother to the clinic on North Loop Boulevard, or to Lancaster for a specialist, and what would you charge per mile?
  • Have you cared for a person who spends most of the day alone, and what do you check each time you arrive?
  • Are you an IHSS provider already, and how many more hours could you take on?
  • If my father fell and you could not get him up alone, what would you do first?
  • How would you keep in touch with me during the day, and how quickly would you call after a fall or a change in her health?
  • What is your rate per hour, and is it more on weekends or overnight?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in California City: hourly rates and schedules

The likely pattern in California City is weekday daytime blocks, often four to eight hours, matching the hours adults spend commuting to work out of town. Families also post short daily check-ins for a parent living alone, several weeks of recovery help once a parent is discharged from a hospital in Lancaster or Tehachapi, and weekend respite for a spouse. Overnight care is less common and usually tied to dementia or a high fall risk.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Private caregivers in Kern County are usually paid close to the $16.50 employed median, and never less than the state's $16.90 minimum, which applies here since no city ordinance sets a higher rate. The $40 agency figure is a statewide median. With a median household income of $60,113 in the city, IHSS is the cost question to settle first: Kern County's Department of Human Services takes Medi-Cal applications, and its closest office is on Highway 58 in Mojave, and IHSS hours are then paid by the county at $17.90. A private hire turns you into an employer who owes payroll taxes and overtime for any hours past nine in one day.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in California City: frequently asked questions

Could I or my brother be paid to look after Dad in California City?

Yes. IHSS pays a relative when the person cared for has Medi-Cal and the county's social worker confirms a need for help at home. Start with Aging and Adult Services at (800) 510-2020; once enrolled, the relative earns $17.90 an hour for whatever hours the county authorizes.

Is there anywhere my mother can go during the day while I work?

The Mable Davis Senior Center in Central Park is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and serves a noon lunch, and the city Dial-A-Ride can take her there for $1.00. Hire a caregiver for the morning and late-afternoon hours either side of the center's schedule.

Who can help me if I am the one doing most of the caregiving?

The county lists Valley Caregiver Resource Center, with an office on California City Boulevard, as its Family Caregiver Support provider for help with training, care planning and respite. Call (661) 821-1626 to ask what is available.

How far is the nearest hospital?

There is none in the city. The closest by road are in Tehachapi (Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley, roughly 31 miles) and Lancaster (Antelope Valley Medical Center, roughly 42), so ask applicants whether they will drive your parent to appointments and after a discharge.

Do families pay anything to post here?

Not to post a job or read the applications that come in. Family Premium, needed for messaging caregivers and confirming the hire, costs $24.99 a month and can be cancelled whenever you like. Caregivers pay no commission, so every dollar of the agreed wage is theirs.
