Finding in-home caregiver jobs in California City

California City is an incorporated city in eastern Kern County with its City Hall at 21000 Hacienda Boulevard. The city describes itself as the third largest in California by land, with 203 square miles inside its limits, and that size shapes caregiving work more than anything else. Two clients who both have a 93505 address can be a long way apart, so the first thing a family will want to know is whether you drive. Most working residents do: the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey found 73.1% of local workers driving alone and a mean commute of 43.3 minutes each way. When the working adults in a household are gone that long, an older parent may be on their own until evening, and a local caregiver is usually hired for exactly those hours.

About 18.8% of California City's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, compared with a Kern County average of 8.7% and a statewide 5.3%. In a city with that much joblessness, a steady IHSS client can be the most reliable paid work available, especially if the person you look after is already a relative or neighbor on Medi-Cal. The Kern County IHSS guide explains how the county authorizes hours and how a provider gets onto the payroll.

If you do not drive, plan around the buses. Kern Transit Route 250 leaves the McDonald's stop on California City Boulevard at 6:11 a.m. on weekdays, calls at Mojave and Rosamond, and reaches the Antelope Valley Medical Center stop in Lancaster at 7:43 a.m.; Route 230 links the city with Ridgecrest on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Inside the city, the municipal Dial-A-Ride runs on weekdays. In your profile, list the part of town you live in, how far you will travel and whether you will take a client to appointments in Mojave or Lancaster.

The census figures point to companionship and safety work. One household in three (33.6%) includes someone 65 or older, and 747 householders aged 65 or older live alone, about 16% of all households. Among people aged 65-plus, 46.8% live with a disability, and 11.4% of adults are veterans. Expect requests for daily check-ins, meal preparation, bathing help, medication reminders and rides to the clinics on North Loop Boulevard. Companion and errand shifts are the usual first job for someone without paid experience.

Pay

Caregiver pay in California City: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Bakersfield–Delano, CA metro (Kern County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Bakersfield–Delano, CA metro (Kern County)$16.50 median ($16.92 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 17,270 jobs; concentration 1.84× national
IHSS provider wage, Kern County$17.90CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Kern County projection: 14,340 aide jobs in 2023 to 19,940 in 2033 (+39.1%), about 30,570 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

The wage survey covers the Bakersfield–Delano metro, which is all of Kern County; nothing is published for California City by itself. The UC Berkeley Labor Center records no California City wage ordinance, leaving California's $16.90 as the minimum for private hours, and IHSS pays $17.90 for county-authorized hours. Household budgets are tight: the city's median household income is $60,113, CalFresh reached 23.0% of households during the survey years, and 63.4% of renting households put at least 35% of their income toward rent. Private families will often offer close to the minimum, so price overnights, weekend shifts and the miles you drive between clients separately, and put mileage in writing before the first shift.

How to enroll as a provider in Kern County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Kern County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to California City

For private, non-medical work a family can hire you directly with no state license. IHSS work in Kern County follows five steps the county sets out: create an online provider account and watch the enrollment videos, get Live Scan fingerprints (you pay the fee), sit an in-person orientation (the county asks for the original Social Security card, not a copy, plus government photo ID), hand in or mail the SIP packet, which holds a W-4, an I-9 and the SOC 426A designation your client signs, then register on the state's Electronic Services Portal for timesheets. The only IHSS office the county lists is at 5357 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield, about 73 road miles away. Agency jobs need a Home Care Aide Registry listing; nursing tasks call for CNA certification from CDPH. Because you are paid, you are a mandated reporter and should report suspected abuse to Kern APS, toll-free (800) 277-7866. The California requirements guide has fuller detail.

California City in numbers

The Department of Finance counted 13,141 residents on January 1, 2026; Census Bureau survey estimates for 2020–2024 give 14,414. Residents are young overall (median age 33.5), but 1,875 are 65 or older. The population is mixed: 39.6% Hispanic or Latino and 24.5% Black or African American, and Spanish is the home language for 29.2% of residents aged five and up, which gives bilingual caregivers an edge. Housing is cheaper than in most of the state, with a median home value of $278,000 and a median gross rent of $1,300; 45.0% of homes are rented and 12.6% of housing units stood vacant.

Primary care is in town. The state facility list shows two licensed clinics on North Loop Boulevard: an Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley rural health clinic at number 9350 and Cal City Clinic at 9300. There is no hospital in the city. By road it is about 31 miles to Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley's 25-bed critical access hospital and about 42 to Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster, which has 390 licensed beds. Questions

Caregiver jobs in California City: frequently asked questions

Is a car essential for caregiving in California City?

Not strictly, but it widens your options a great deal. The city covers 203 square miles, the municipal Dial-A-Ride only runs on weekdays until 5 p.m., and Kern Transit buses leave from a handful of stops on California City Boulevard. List on your profile the neighborhoods you can get to by bus or on foot.

How much does IHSS pay in California City?

$17.90 an hour since July 1, 2026, the Kern County rate, for the hours the county authorizes. Pay is set by the client's county of residence: a Lancaster client lives in Los Angeles County, so those hours follow the Los Angeles County IHSS rate.

Is there CNA training within reach of California City?

Cerro Coso Community College runs its CNA course at sites including Ridgecrest, and the Home Health Aide add-on is taught at the Ridgecrest campus. Without a car, Route 230 is the bus link, but it runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only; compare the class schedule with its timetable.

Can I get work at the clinics on North Loop Boulevard through this site?

No. Both clinics recruit their own employees. This site connects caregivers with households that want help at home, although clinic or front-desk experience is still worth listing on your profile.

Does California City set its own minimum wage?

It does not. Berkeley's Labor Center inventory shows nothing for California City, so private hourly work falls under California's $16.90. Agree any premium for nights, weekends or heavy care before you start.
