How to find an in-home caregiver in Ridgecrest

Ridgecrest families have an unusual option before hiring privately: the hospital itself sends non-medical aides. RRH Personal Care Services, run by Ridgecrest Regional Hospital from Triangle Drive, covers bathing, grooming, dressing, meals, housekeeping, shopping, medication reminders and pre-arranged rides to appointments, in blocks of 2 to 12 hours a day. Its sister services, Visiting Nurse Services and the hospital hospice, handle skilled and end-of-life care at home. A private caregiver usually fills the gaps around those visits: early mornings, weekends, overnight, or the steady weekday company the agency schedule does not cover.

When you post, say exactly what the job involves. Name the days and times, the bathing or toileting help involved, signs of dementia, and whether rides will be in the caregiver's car or on the city's free Dial-A-Ride. Most Ridgecrest homes speak English; ACS 2020–2024 counts 11.5% of residents five and older who speak Spanish at home, so say so if Spanish comes more easily to your parent. Profiles nearest 93555 are listed first, and new Ridgecrest postings show up on this page once published.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Ridgecrest

Verify credentials before you rely on them. Nursing assistants and home health aides are certified by CDPH, and the state's online search confirms a certificate in seconds; Cerro Coso trains both on its College Heights Boulevard campus, so local applicants may name it. Every aide a licensed home care organization sends, hospital staff included, must hold a current CDSS Home Care Aide registration, and you can search that list as well. Kern County fingerprints every IHSS provider and requires its orientation before the first paycheck. Plenty of good private caregivers have no certificate at all, so the references matter most: phone two past employers and find out how the applicant dealt with a late arrival, a fall and a parent who said no. Interview at your parent's house, where the work will happen, and pay for one try-out shift before agreeing to more. We do not vet anyone who applies; a family that wants a background report buys it with the applicant's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • My mother rides the Dial-A-Ride to the senior center on South Warner; can you have her ready before the 10:45 a.m. departure?
  • If my father comes home from the hospital's transitional care unit, how would you plan his first week?
  • The hospice nurse and aide visit twice a week; what would you handle on the other days?
  • Do you have your own car for trips to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital and the clinics on China Lake Boulevard?
  • My mother has dialysis at the SRS clinic on South Richmond Road; would you wait with her or come back for her?
  • Have you cared for a veteran, and can you help with VA paperwork or appointments?
  • If RRH Personal Care Services covers weekday mornings, could you take evenings and weekends?
  • How much notice would you give before leaving the job?

Around the agency. A private caregiver for the hours RRH Personal Care Services does not cover, often evenings and weekends. Lunch and errands. Late-morning help, a ride to the senior center meal, then an afternoon of chores. Hospice support. Daytime company and personal care between nurse and aide visits, or overnights near the end. After rehab. Several weeks of daily visits once a parent leaves the transitional care unit.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The Labor Center's July 2026 table lists neither Ridgecrest nor Kern County, so a caregiver you employ yourself must get at least the state's $16.90 an hour. Set beside that: $16.50, the typical hourly wage BLS found for Kern aides in May 2025; $17.90, paid to Kern IHSS providers from July 1, 2026; and $40.00, CareScout's 2025 statewide agency figure. Budget for overtime too if shifts run long; our hiring guide explains California's personal attendant rules. Ask about IHSS on (661) 868-1003 if your parent has Medi-Cal; CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination. The hospital's visiting nurse service lists Medicare, Medi-Cal, Tricare and private insurance among the coverage it accepts.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
