How to find an in-home caregiver in Gardena

Start with what the city already provides. The Senior Day Care Center at 14517 S. Crenshaw Blvd., behind Saint John Lutheran Church, takes frail or memory-impaired adults 55 and over from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, with fees on a sliding scale and respite support for the family; the city describes it as a state-licensed adult day program for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's. The Nakaoka center's Senior Bureau brings hot lunches to homebound residents Monday to Friday and has staff and volunteers who help with light housekeeping, appointments and paperwork. With those in place, the request you post is often narrow: someone to get your father ready and to the day center by nine, to be there when he returns, and to cover Saturday and Sunday.

Include your ZIP code (90247, 90248 or 90249), the hours and the tasks. Caregivers near Gardena can then reply, and the profiles listed above update as new people join. Gardena is linguistically varied: in ACS 2020–2024 33.5% of Gardena residents over four use Spanish at home and 16.7% an Asian or Pacific Island language, and residents who are Japanese (8.2%), Korean (5.4%) or Filipino (5.0%) together make up nearly a fifth of the city. If your mother would rather be spoken to in Japanese, Korean or Spanish, ask for it plainly.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Gardena

Do your own checks before anyone starts. Look up any applicant who says they are registered on the state Home Care Aide Registry; independents may register voluntarily, agency staff must. A CNA certificate can be confirmed with the state, and an IHSS provider will have gone through county enrollment. For a parent with dementia, ask how the caregiver handles refusal, repeated questions and wandering, and listen for concrete examples rather than general reassurance. Meet in the home, call at least two past employers, have the candidate sign consent before any background check you run, and pay for one trial shift on a day your parent is not at the day center. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks; its Verified badge reflects a single reviewed document.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Gardena sets no wage of its own, so the legal minimum for a caregiver is the state $16.90; the unincorporated county rate does not apply inside the city. Independent rates are negotiated with you, and most fall above the county's $19.64 IHSS pay and below the $40.00 state agency median. Dementia experience and a second language tend to raise a quote. The day center's sliding-scale fee and the city's meal programs can shrink the number of hours you pay for privately. Count hours as you go: the state Domestic Worker Bill of Rights requires overtime when a day goes past its ninth hour, and again when the weekly total goes beyond 45.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
