How to find an in-home caregiver in Whittier
Start by posting from your parent's address, not yours: Whittier spans five ZIP codes, 90601 through 90605, and caregivers choose how far they travel. Spell out the tasks, the days and the time of day, and mention anything a stranger would need to know on arrival, such as a dog, a key safe or a parent who does not answer the door. Caregivers whose radius covers the address are told about your posting, and profiles near Whittier show above as they are created.
Applicants may live in Whittier itself or in neighboring cities such as Norwalk and Downey; ask how they will travel and how long it takes. Spanish is spoken at home by 36.9% of Whittier residents aged five and older (ACS 2020–2024); if Spanish is the language your parent relaxes in, lead the posting with it. Families arranging help after a stay at PIH Health Whittier Hospital should post before the discharge date if they can, so there is time to interview.

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

Evaluating caregivers in Whittier
Ask every applicant which of three public credentials they hold. A home care aide registration number can be looked up with CDSS. An IHSS provider in Los Angeles County has passed a state Justice Department fingerprint check and attended the county's in-person orientation. A certified nursing assistant, or a certified home health aide, holds a CDPH certificate; Río Hondo College on Workman Mill Road trains both. Confirm the credential, then ring two past employers, let your parent take part in the meeting, and book a paid trial visit or two before you settle on a weekly plan. CaregiverConnect runs no background checks on the people who join. A screening firm can run a report with the applicant's written permission; the Verified badge on a profile simply records that we received and reviewed an uploaded document.

- My mother is coming home from PIH Health Whittier Hospital after a hip operation; have you helped someone through that kind of recovery?
- Are you a CNA or a home health aide, and where did you train?
- Could you drive Dad to his doctor or to the SASSFA lunch, and is your car insured for that?

- How much do you charge, and does the rate change for evenings or weekends?
What in-home care costs in Whittier: hourly rates and schedules
Typical Whittier postings ask for weekday morning help with washing, dressing and breakfast; afternoon companionship and errands for someone living alone; temporary daily visits after surgery; and overnight cover when dementia makes nights unsafe. SASSFA's home-based services provide light housekeeping and personal care of up to four hours a week for eligible frail adults 60 and over, which can shorten the privately paid week.

| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
In the city of Whittier the legal minimum is the state's $16.90, because the city has no wage ordinance on the Berkeley Labor Center list; if your parent lives in an unincorporated area outside city limits, the county's $18.47 rate covers businesses and nonprofits there. For comparison, IHSS providers in Los Angeles County earn $19.64 and employed aides in the metro a median $16.50 (May 2025). A California agency charges a median $40 an hour for homemaker services, according to CareScout's 2025 survey. Long or live-in shifts trigger overtime: California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights pays personal attendants extra beyond nine daily hours or 45 weekly.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Whittier: frequently asked questions
How soon after posting do Whittier families hear from caregivers?

Is there free in-home help for seniors in Whittier?
SASSFA offers light housekeeping and personal care, up to four hours a week, to frail adults 60 and over, along with care management. Call (562) 946-2237 to ask about eligibility.
How do older Whittier residents get to appointments?
Whittier Dial-A-Ride serves city residents 60 and over and those with a qualifying disability, using passes bought at Palm Park, Parnell Park or the Whittier Community Center. Proof of age is required.
