Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Whittier

In the ACS 2020–2024 survey 15.0% of residents were 65 or over and 2.6% were 85 or over, and 3,041 people aged 65-plus lived alone, a group that often needs a few hours of help a day rather than round-the-clock care. Families looking for that kind of help publish their requests with a Whittier ZIP code (90601 to 90605), and the listings above update as each one goes live. A good profile here names the ZIP codes you can reach and says plainly whether you can help a client with stairs.

The mean commute for Whittier workers is 33.2 minutes, and 1.4% of them use public transportation, so families will assume you drive unless you say otherwise. If you do drive, offering rides to appointments at PIH Health Whittier Hospital on Washington Boulevard or Whittier Hospital Medical Center on Colima Road makes you more useful. Among residents aged five and over, 57.3% speak only English at home and 36.9% speak Spanish; list Spanish if you have it, because a family will often choose on that alone.

Postings tend to cover help for an older person living alone, a few weeks of support after surgery or a hospital stay, personal care for someone with limited mobility, evening or overnight cover for dementia, and weekend breaks for a family carer. Without experience, look for companionship, shopping and light housekeeping requests; Río Hondo's CNA course is the local step up to hands-on care.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Whittier: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Nursing assistants, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties)$22.78 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Whittier has never adopted a local wage floor and does not appear among the California localities in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory (updated July 23, 2026). Employers inside the city therefore follow the $16.90 state rate. The city's Dial-A-Ride page asks riders to check whether they are Whittier residents or live in unincorporated county territory, a distinction that matters for pay too: in unincorporated areas a business or nonprofit has owed $18.47 an hour since July 1, 2026. Los Angeles County IHSS pays $19.64. The metro figures, a $16.50 median for aides and $22.78 for CNAs (May 2025), cover Los Angeles and Orange counties together, so treat them as a floor for private work rather than a target.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Whittier

California requires no license for a caregiver hired directly by a Whittier family for non-medical help. Registry enrollment with CDSS is a condition of agency employment in home care, while a Whittier caregiver working independently can sign up purely so families can look them up. Becoming an IHSS provider means enrolling with Los Angeles County DPSS: attend the in-person orientation, sign the SOC 846 provider agreement, and submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. The PASC registry, (877) 565-4477, then lets IHSS recipients find you. Hospital and nursing-home aide jobs call for a CDPH nursing assistant certificate, and certified home health aide is a further credential for care in clients' homes. Whittier caregivers who see possible elder abuse have a legal duty to report it; the county line is (877) 477-3646. Details are in the requirements guide and the county IHSS guide.
