Requests to expect in Lomita: help on the days around the city's new senior classes, a ride and company on a $1 Dial-A-Ride trip to a Torrance or Harbor City medical office, care on dialysis days, evening and weekend relief for a spouse, and extra help while a parent is on hospice at home. With no certificate yet, a six-bed care home or a companion job is a realistic place to start; a CNA certificate opens the two nursing homes.

Caregiver pay in Lomita: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

According to EDD estimates, about 3.4% of Lomita's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026. Los Angeles County averaged 5.4% and California 5.3% across those months, and Lomita's monthly rate stayed between 3.1% and 3.9% with an average labor force near 10,960. Care work pays by the hour, so these are the numbers to plan with: IHSS pays $19.64 an hour when the client lives in Lomita, and the Los Angeles County IHSS guide lays out how to become a provider.

Lomita has no entry in UC Berkeley's Labor Center inventory of local minimum wages (September 30, 2026), which leaves the state's $16.90 as the minimum when a Lomita household employs you. Working as a personal attendant, you are owed overtime once you pass nine hours in a day or 45 hours in a week. In ACS 2020–2024 the city's median household income is $93,810 and the median gross rent $1,961.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Lomita

Lomita has no local caregiver license. If a family hires you directly for non-medical care, the state does not require one either. To work through A Better Solution, Adept Touch, Right at Home or another licensed home care organization, you must first register as a home care aide with CDSS ($35, plus Live Scan fingerprints). The nursing homes hire certified nursing assistants, and the home health agencies and hospices send aides into clients' homes; Harbor College's home health aide course prepares you for that state certificate. IHSS providers enroll with the county's Department of Public Social Services, attend an in-person orientation and pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check. California also requires paid caregivers to report suspected elder abuse. The requirements guide goes into each path.
