Finding in-home caregiver jobs in South Gate

The Department of Finance counted 93,467 people in South Gate on January 1, 2026. ACS 2020–2024 counts 11,344 residents aged 65 and over (12.4%), 4,184 of them 75 or older, and 8,295 households (32.9%) where a resident has passed 65. Some 1,581 residents 65 and over live alone, and 21.6% have incomes below the poverty line. That mix produces two kinds of posting: relatives in a shared home who need a few dependable hours, and older people on their own who need someone for shopping, bathing and appointments. Requests tagged with 90280, the city's ZIP code, are listed above whenever a family posts one.

Spanish is the working language for most of this market. Of residents aged five and up, 81.5% speak Spanish at home, and 43.4% of them speak English less than very well. The city's Phone-A-Ride service lets an enrolled rider bring a caregiver along on medical and grocery trips, so a client without a car can still go out with you; mention in your profile whether you drive, and whether you are happy to ride along instead.

Pay

Caregiver pay in South Gate: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

South Gate does not set its own minimum wage. The Berkeley Labor Center's ordinance tracker has no South Gate line, so the state's $16.90 an hour is the minimum for caregiving in the city, and the unincorporated Los Angeles County rate does not reach inside South Gate's limits. BLS data for May 2025 show a $16.50 midpoint for metro aides, and IHSS pays Los Angeles County providers $19.64. Enrolling as an IHSS provider also lets you work for South Gate clients whose care is funded through Medi-Cal.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to South Gate

Caring for a South Gate family in their home, for companionship, personal care and household tasks, needs no state license when the family hires you directly. Registering with the state's aide registry is optional for you, though any licensed home care organization must put its aides on it. Nursing tasks, or a post at a skilled nursing facility, call for CDPH certification as a nurse assistant. IHSS work goes through Los Angeles County DPSS, which enrolls providers, and PASC, the county public authority, which runs orientation and the Homecare Registry. Being paid to care also makes you legally bound to report signs that a South Gate elder or dependent adult is being harmed, by calling (877) 477-3646.
