Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Long Beach

Long Beach is the second-largest city in Los Angeles County, with 462,193 residents on January 1, 2026, and most of its private caregiving happens one household at a time: an adult daughter arranging mornings for a father who lives alone, a couple near the hospitals on Atlantic Avenue needing help after a discharge, a family on the east side wanting a weekend companion. Each of those families posts here under its own ZIP code, and new requests are added to the list above the moment they go live. Your profile is what they read first, so say which part of the city you live in, which bus lines or freeways you use, and whether you have a car.

Distance in Long Beach is measured in crosstown traffic rather than miles. A caregiver living near downtown can cross much of the city quickly off-peak, but freeway congestion turns a short trip into a long one at shift change. Set a travel radius you would honestly drive at 7 a.m., and if you also accept work in neighboring Lakewood, Signal Hill or the South Bay, list them. Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog are the languages most often heard at home after English, so name every language you can hold a conversation in; families looking after a parent who prefers one of them search for it.

Expect weekday blocks for a parent living alone, companionship and errands, help at home after a stay at one of the city's hospitals, overnight supervision, respite for a working family and dementia care that grows over time. Without paid experience, start with companionship, meal preparation and going along to appointments; families tend to save bathing, transfers and dementia support for someone with a track record, even an unpaid one with a relative.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Long Beach: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties)$16.50 median ($17.25 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 385,530 jobs; concentration 2.22× national
IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County$19.64CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The metro Long Beach shares with Los Angeles and Orange County employed 385,530 home health and personal care aides in May 2025, more than twice the national concentration, at a $16.50 median. The county's IHSS rate of $19.64 sits about three dollars above that median, so an IHSS provider in Long Beach out-earns the typical agency aide per hour. Long Beach does not appear in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's inventory of local minimum-wage ordinances, so the $16.90 state floor applies to general employment in the city; the City of Los Angeles next door sets $18.42 from July 1, 2026, which matters if you also take work across the boundary. Private rates are agreed with each family and are higher for overnights, dementia care and work that requires your own car.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Long Beach

California's three-track system applies here unchanged. California sets no license for non-medical care you provide to a Long Beach family that pays you directly; registering voluntarily on the state Home Care Aide Registry ($35 and a Live Scan) gives them a check they can look up. Registration is not optional for agency aides, only for independents. Under IHSS the person receiving care is your employer; you enroll with Los Angeles County, and PASC (the Personal Assistance Services Council, which acts as public authority) fields background-check, enrollment and training questions on (877) 565-4477. Nursing tasks and facility work need a CDPH nurse assistant certificate. California makes every paid caregiver a mandated reporter of elder abuse, and Los Angeles County takes those reports on (877) 477-3646. The requirements guide and the IHSS pay-by-county guide carry the detail.

The area

Long Beach in numbers

The city counted 462,193 residents at the start of 2026 by the state Department of Finance count. In the 2022 American Community Survey figures reported for the city, 13.6% of residents were 65 or older, the median age was 36.7, a quarter of households (25.9%) included someone 65 or older, and 44.0% of residents were Hispanic or Latino. For a caregiver, that younger profile means many of the people who hire you will be adult children arranging care for a parent while holding down jobs of their own.

Three hospitals shape the work: MemorialCare's Long Beach Medical Center at 2801 Atlantic Avenue, which has served the city for more than 115 years; Dignity Health's St. Mary Medical Center at 1050 Linden Avenue, a 360-bed nonprofit hospital; and the VA Long Beach medical center on East Seventh Street. Discharges from all three create short, intense requests for help at home. Nearby markets with their own pages are Torrance, Huntington Beach and Los Angeles.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Long Beach: frequently asked questions

Where do Long Beach caregiver postings come from?

From families who post directly with their ZIP code, across the city and the towns around it. The list above updates as they publish, and each posting shows how far it is from you so you can judge the drive.

Is the minimum wage in Long Beach higher than the state rate?

Not for general employment: Long Beach is not listed in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory of local minimum-wage ordinances, so California's $16.90 applies. Work inside the City of Los Angeles is covered by its $18.42 rate from July 1, 2026.

Who handles IHSS enrollment for Long Beach caregivers?

Enrollment runs through Los Angeles County, not the city. Call PASC on (877) 565-4477 for enrollment and background-check questions, or the DPSS IHSS Helpline on (888) 822-9622. The county pays $19.64 an hour for authorized hours.

Does it help to speak Khmer or Tagalog?

It can. After English and Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog are among the languages most spoken at home in Long Beach, and a family caring for a parent who prefers one of them will filter for it. List every language on your profile.

Can I start without experience?

Companionship, errands, meals and accompanying someone to appointments are realistic first jobs. Personal care and dementia care usually go to people who have done them, including for their own relatives; describe that experience honestly.

Will a bus commute work for caregiving in Long Beach?

For many day shifts, yes; name the Long Beach Transit lines you ride and your earliest realistic start. Families with overnight or early-morning needs often ask about a car, so be clear about it.

Where do Long Beach families look for caregivers?

On the Long Beach family page, where profiles near the city appear as caregivers join.
