Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Los Angeles County

Los Angeles County is too large to treat as one job market. The Department of Finance counted 9,837,286 residents on January 1, 2026, and Lancaster and Long Beach are as far apart in practice as two different counties. Most caregivers here work inside one region: the City of Los Angeles and its neighbors, the harbor and South Bay, the San Gabriel Valley, the Glendale and Burbank corridor, the Santa Clarita Valley, the Antelope Valley or the Pomona Valley. Families post with a ZIP code and you set a travel radius, so the postings above already sort themselves by distance. Pick a radius you can keep at rush hour; mean travel time to work in the county is 30.4 minutes (ACS 2020–2024).

Language narrows the field as much as distance. Among county residents five or older, 55.1% use a language besides English at home and 37.6% use Spanish. List every language you can use with a client, including Armenian, Korean, Tagalog, Chinese or Farsi if you speak them, and name the region you live in on your profile. The postings above update as families publish them.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Los Angeles County

Typical requests are weekday bathing, dressing and company for an aging parent, short-term help once a hospital sends someone home, dementia supervision, overnights and weekend relief. Without a certificate, start with companionship and housekeeping postings; families who need transfers or dementia care pick applicants whose profiles show that work.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Los Angeles County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties)$16.50 median ($17.25 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 385,530 jobs; concentration 2.22× national
IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County$19.64CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties)$22.78 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Los Angeles County projection: 289,930 aide jobs in 2023 to 390,820 in 2033 (+34.8%), about 596,650 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

The legal floor depends on where the work happens. Inside the City of Los Angeles the Minimum Wage Ordinance rate rose to $18.42 an hour on July 1, 2026 (Office of Wage Standards notice of January 30, 2026). In unincorporated areas of the county the rate is $18.47 from the same date, according to the county's Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, which describes coverage for work at a business or nonprofit. Elsewhere the $16.90 state rate is the floor unless that city has an ordinance of its own, so check the city where your client lives. The $16.50 metro median is a May 2025 figure for Los Angeles and Orange counties together and sits below both local rates. IHSS pays $19.64. Nursing assistants earn a $22.78 median across the metro, and the county's aide jobs are projected to grow 34.8% in a decade against 8.5% for all occupations.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Los Angeles County

California's rules apply across the county; what differs is scale. On the CDSS licensing file of May 2025 594 Home Care Organizations held county addresses and active licenses, whose aides need a Home Care Aide Registry listing, alongside 1,649 elderly residential care homes that hire their own staff. IHSS is administered by the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS); a new provider attends an orientation, signs forms SOC 426 and SOC 846, and passes a Department of Justice fingerprint check, all within 90 calendar days. PASC, the Personal Assistance Services Council, acts as Public Authority and keeps the provider registry. No license at all is required when a family hires you itself for non-medical care. Paid carers of older adults must report suspected abuse; the county's Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Hotline takes calls at (877) 477-3646. The requirements guide explains each system.

Los Angeles County in numbers

The ACS 2020–2024 puts 15.2% of county residents, about 1.49 million people, at 65 or older, and someone that age lives in 30.9% of households. The Department of Finance projects the 65-plus population to rise from about 1.45 million in 2020 to about 2.35 million in 2040, when it would be 24.4% of the county, and the 85-plus group to more than double, from about 183,000 to about 444,000. Median household income is $90,112 and median gross rent $1,954, so many families weigh IHSS before paying privately.

EDD counted 889,200 jobs in health care and social assistance in August 2026, up 3.4% in a year, and county unemployment was 4.9%, below the 5.4% state rate. Hospital discharges are a steady source of short-notice postings: Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood has 520 inpatient beds, and the county Department of Health Services runs four hospitals of its own, Los Angeles General, Harbor–UCLA, Olive View–UCLA and Rancho Los Amigos. Neighboring markets with their own pages are Orange County and San Bernardino County.

The one for the place the work is done: $18.42 inside the City of Los Angeles and $18.47 in unincorporated county areas from July 1, 2026, otherwise the $16.90 state rate unless the city sets its own. Your address does not decide it.

How do I become an IHSS provider in the county?

Do IHSS providers here get health insurance?

Eligible ones can. The PASC-SEIU Homecare Workers Health Care Plan costs $1 a month for providers authorized for at least 74 hours a month for two months running who live in or within 15 miles of the county; call (855) 727-2756.
