Some private requests you may see in La Mirada follow a hospital or nursing-home stay: a few weeks of help after a parent comes home from rehab, then a steady schedule of bathing, meals, medication reminders and rides to appointments. Many families also want a companion for a parent who lives alone; ACS counts 1,685 La Mirada residents 65 and over in one-person households. With no training yet, companion and errand work, plus meal preparation, are the realistic place to start.

Caregiver pay in La Mirada: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

About 5.1% of La Mirada's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. That sits below both the Los Angeles County rate of 5.4% and California's 5.3%; the monthly figures ran from 4.6% to 5.7% for a labor force of roughly 23,650. What shapes pay for care work here is less the jobless rate than who hires: IHSS clients pay through the county at $19.64 an hour, and the Los Angeles County IHSS guide explains how to enroll as a provider.

La Mirada is an incorporated city, and La Mirada does not appear among the cities with their own wage law in the UC Berkeley Labor Center list, which leaves California's $16.90 as the hourly minimum inside city limits. The county's $18.47 rate covers only unincorporated areas and does not reach La Mirada addresses. Nursing assistants in the metro earn a $22.78 median, well above the $16.50 aide median, a gap worth weighing if you are deciding whether to take a CNA course. Household-employed personal attendants qualify for overtime at 1.5 times pay once a shift tops nine hours, or the week tops 45. The city's median household income in ACS 2020–2024 was $109,288; agree the rate in writing before the first shift.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to La Mirada

No city rule sits on top of state law in La Mirada. A family can employ you directly for non-medical help without a license. Before a home care organization in the city can send you to clients, your name has to be on the state's aide registry, which costs $35 and requires Live Scan fingerprints. The two skilled nursing facilities and the specialty hospital hire certified nurse assistants, which means finishing a state-approved course and passing the certification exam. IHSS providers enroll through Los Angeles County DPSS, outlined on the county page. State law makes you a mandated reporter if you suspect a client who is an elder or dependent adult is being abused. The California caregiver requirements guide covers the rest.
