Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Los Angeles

The City of Los Angeles had 3,806,201 residents on January 1, 2026, and it behaves like several cities stitched together. A caregiver in Sylmar, one in Boyle Heights and one in San Pedro are all "in Los Angeles", but none of them wants a daily commute to the others. Families post with their ZIP code and the postings above show distance from your own, so set a travel radius you will actually drive or ride at the hours a family needs. Mean travel time to work for city residents is 30.7 minutes (ACS 2020–2024); add the time it takes to park on a residential street.

A car helps but is not required. Metro's regular fare is $1.75 with a $5 daily cap, so a caregiver who lives near a rail line or a frequent bus can take postings a driver might skip because of parking. Your profile should state if you drive, and if you can take a client to appointments. At home, 56.4% of city residents five or older use a language besides English, and Spanish alone accounts for 39.3% of that age group; list every language you can use at the bedside. New city postings appear above as soon as a family publishes one.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Los Angeles: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Los Angeles County projection: 289,930 aide jobs in 2023 to 390,820 in 2033 (+34.8%), about 596,650 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

The number that matters most inside the city limits is the local minimum wage. On January 30, 2026 the Office of Wage Standards announced that the City's rate would rise by $0.55 to $18.42 an hour starting July 1, 2026, tied to the Los Angeles area CPI-W. The notice covers employees who perform at least two hours of work within the City for an employer and are owed the state minimum wage, and it asks employers to post the rate in 13 languages; questions go to (213) 847-2670. That puts the city floor above the $16.90 state rate and above the $16.50 median for employed aides across the two-county metro in May 2025. IHSS providers are paid $19.64. Private families agree a rate with you directly, and dementia care, nights, weekends and driving usually justify more than the floor.

How to enroll as a provider in Los Angeles County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Los Angeles County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Los Angeles

Which rules apply depends on who hires you. No state license is needed when you work for a family directly on non-medical tasks, though you can sign up for the Home Care Aide Registry by choice for $35. If you work through one of the county's 594 licensed Home Care Organizations (May 2025 state file), registry listing is mandatory. IHSS providers enroll through DPSS, the county social services department, in four steps that must be done within 90 calendar days: attending orientation in person, filing the SOC 426 (bring your original photo ID and Social Security card), the SOC 846 agreement, and DOJ fingerprinting. After that you can apply to the PASC registry. Nursing assistant certification from CDPH is needed for facility jobs. The law makes paid caregivers report suspected elder abuse; when you do, call the county line, (877) 477-3646. Every rule is set out in our California requirements guide.

Los Angeles in numbers

ACS 2020–2024 counts 549,590 city residents aged 65 or over, 14.2% of the population, and 72,682 aged 85 or over. Someone 65 or older lives in 27.5% of city households, and 132,778 householders of that age live alone, which is the situation behind many companionship and check-in postings. Just over a third of residents, 35.7%, were born abroad. Median household income is $81,939 and median gross rent $1,933, with 54.6% of renting households paying 30% or more of income in rent; many families therefore combine a few IHSS hours with a smaller private arrangement.

EDD counted 889,200 health care and social assistance jobs in Los Angeles County in August 2026, 3.4% more than a year earlier, with county unemployment at 4.9%. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, 757 Westwood Plaza, has 520 inpatient beds and treats more than 50,000 emergency patients a year, and the county's Department of Health Services runs Los Angeles General Medical Center. Neighboring cities with their own pages include Glendale and Long Beach; the county page compares the regions.

$18.42 an hour from July 1, 2026, for work of at least two hours inside the City, under the Minimum Wage Ordinance. It rises each July 1 with the local CPI-W. The Office of Wage Standards answers questions at (213) 847-2670.

How long does IHSS enrollment take?

DPSS gives applicants up to 90 calendar days to finish orientation, the two forms and the fingerprint check, with a possible 45-day extension for good cause. You cannot be paid until enrollment is complete.
