How to find an in-home caregiver in Los Angeles County
Start with your ZIP code, not the county name. A caregiver in Pomona will rarely take a morning shift in Santa Monica, and a family in Palmdale is better served by someone who already lives in the Antelope Valley. Post the days, the hours and the address area, and the caregivers whose radius covers you see it; the cards above are sorted nearest first and change as caregivers join. If your parent lives in another part of the county from you, post from their ZIP code.
Language is the second filter. Among residents five and older, 37.6% speak Spanish at home, and 41.7% of that group rate their English below "very well", per ACS 2020–2024. The City of Los Angeles WorkSource Centers, which train and place local job seekers, list Armenian, Farsi, Korean, Russian and Tagalog among their service languages, a fair hint at the mix you will see on caregiver profiles. Name the language your relative is most comfortable in, because a caregiver who can explain a new medication in it is worth more than one with an extra certificate. Expect to compare several applicants: the state's May 2025 licensing file lists 594 Home Care Organizations in the county, so agencies and private caregivers compete for the same families.

Types of in-home care families in Los Angeles County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Los Angeles County
Three public records can be checked. An agency aide needs a CDSS Home Care Aide Registry listing; independents can join it for $35. An IHSS provider in this county has cleared DOJ fingerprinting and sat through an orientation; PASC, the IHSS Public Authority, gives registry provider lists to eligible IHSS recipients. A certified nursing assistant holds a CDPH certificate. Beyond that, call two people who saw the caregiver on the job, hold the interview where your relative can join in, book a paid trial shift or two, and get written consent before ordering a consumer background report. We do not screen caregivers ourselves: the Verified badge means proof was uploaded and looked at, nothing more.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where in the county are you based, and what does the trip to our home look like on a weekday morning?
- Are you enrolled as an IHSS provider here, and has PASC put you on its registry?
- What languages could you speak with my mother, and are you comfortable reading English discharge instructions?
- Would you ride Access Paratransit with my father to appointments, or drive him yourself?
- Tell us about a dementia client who refused a shower or wandered off: what did you do?
- Which minimum wage applies at our address, and what rate are you asking above it?
- If you fall ill, who fills in, and how much warning do you need before a schedule change?
What in-home care costs in Los Angeles County: hourly rates and schedules
What families post. Weekday blocks while an adult child works, a few weeks of help after a discharge, overnights for someone who wanders, and Saturday or Sunday breaks for a husband or wife doing most of the care.
Timing. Build the commute into start times, and say whether the start can move by half an hour. If you need two caregivers to cover a week, say so in one posting.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim MSA (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Your floor depends on where the care is given. The City of Los Angeles minimum wage is $18.42 from July 1, 2026; unincorporated county areas have their own $18.47 rate, which the county describes for work at businesses and nonprofits; elsewhere the $16.90 state rate applies unless the city has its own ordinance. With IHSS paying providers $19.64 and agencies at a $40 CareScout median, most private arrangements land between those two figures, higher for nights, dementia care and driving. Overtime is owed to a personal attendant for hours beyond 9 in a workday or 45 in a workweek (DIR). If your relative has Medi-Cal and limited savings, apply to IHSS first; PASC lists the asset limit as $2,000 for one person and $3,000 for a couple.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
