How to find an in-home caregiver in Ventura County

Start with where your relative lives, because caregivers rarely cross the county for a short shift. On the coastal plain (Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Camarillo and most of Ventura) distances between cities are short, and Gold Coast Transit's GO ACCESS vans give seniors 65 and over curb-to-curb rides. The east county, Thousand Oaks with Newbury Park, Simi Valley and Moorpark, works as a separate market, and each of those cities runs its own local buses. Santa Paula, Fillmore and Ojai have smaller pools; offering a mileage allowance, or grouping care into fewer, longer visits, brings in applicants from Ventura or Oxnard.

Language matters here. The 2020–2024 ACS finds Spanish in the homes of 30.2% of county residents over four, and 12.2% are Spanish speakers with limited English, so state which language your relative prefers. Profiles above are ranked by distance from whichever ZIP code you type, and new ones appear as caregivers sign up; enter your relative's code rather than your own.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Ventura County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Ventura County

Start with what can be verified. IHSS providers enrolled through the Human Services Agency have attended orientation and passed a Live Scan criminal background check; registry providers have also been interviewed by the Public Authority, which will send a list of names to anyone already approved for IHSS. Agency aides must be on California's Home Care Aide Registry, and some independents sign up as well. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH; the community-college course here is at Ventura College. Then telephone two earlier employers, include your relative in the interview, and pay for one trial day before committing to regular hours. Ordering a background report, with signed consent, is up to you; CaregiverConnect screens nobody, and its Verified badge means only that paperwork was submitted.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town do you drive from, and how is that route at 8 a.m.?
  • Have you worked with patients after a stay at Los Robles, Community Memorial, St. John's or Ventura County Medical Center?
  • Are you enrolled with Ventura County IHSS, CDPH-certified, or listed on the state aide registry?
  • Can you explain medication instructions to my father in Spanish?
  • Would you ride GO ACCESS or Dial-A-Ride with my mother, or drive her yourself and bill mileage?
  • How would you handle a red-flag fire warning or an evacuation order while you are with my parent?
  • Is your rate the same on weekdays, nights and weekends?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Ventura County: hourly rates and schedules

Coastal cities. Weekday blocks while adult children work, plus short evening visits for medication and meals. East county. Weekday care too, often built around a fixed medical appointment that needs a driver. River valley and Ojai. Fewer, longer shifts, or a live-in arrangement where daily driving is impractical.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Set a private rate against four benchmarks: California's $16.90 minimum (none of the county's cities has adopted a higher one, per UC Berkeley's Labor Center), the metro aide median of $16.50 and mean of $17.88, the $20.97 the county's IHSS program pays every provider, and the $40 statewide agency median from CareScout. Hiring directly usually falls between the IHSS and agency figures. A relative who is 65-plus, blind or disabled and on Medi-Cal may qualify for IHSS, so call 805-654-3236 for an assessment before budgeting private hours. Shifts over nine hours, or weeks over 45, trigger overtime for personal attendants.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Ventura County: frequently asked questions

How does a parent here get IHSS hours?

Call 805-654-3236, email, fax or visit the Ventura or Simi Valley office, then return the SOC 873 health care certification within 45 days. After a home visit the county decides how many hours to authorize, and the provider your parent chooses is paid $20.97 an hour.

Can the IHSS registry find someone for us?

Yes, once your parent is approved. The Public Authority, 805-654-3416, sends a list of prescreened registry providers; your family interviews them and remains the employer.

Where can I get support as a family caregiver?

Fill out the VCAAA's TCARE assessment, then work with the resource center for your area: Senior Concerns in the east county, the Camarillo Health Care District, or La Buena Vida at VCAAA for the west county and Spanish-speaking caregivers.

My mother lives in Fillmore. Will anyone come?

Post with her ZIP code and say whether you can pay for mileage. Caregivers who live in the river valley see the post first; others from Ventura or Oxnard may respond to longer shifts.

Is there a free ride option for seniors?

Gold Coast Transit buses are free for riders 75 and over and $1.00 for ages 65 to 74; GO ACCESS curb-to-curb rides cost $4.00. VCAAA's ElderHelp tickets are limited to the highest-need clients because of reduced funding.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers?

No checks are run by the platform. Reading profiles, phoning references and any background screening fall to you; posting costs nothing, and the Family Premium plan is required only for messaging and confirming a hire.
