How to find an in-home caregiver in Fillmore

Most in-home care in Fillmore is arranged privately. Your father or mother may already be living with family, and the census numbers back that up: 1,540 of the city's 5,173 households, or 29.8%, have a member aged 65 or more (ACS 2020–2024). What you are usually looking for is a person who can cover the hours when the rest of the household is at work or school, someone who can drive to appointments, or someone who can stay overnight after a hospital stay.

A useful Fillmore post names the neighborhood, the shift times, the hands-on tasks (bathing, transfers, meals, pills) and whether the job involves driving. Spanish is spoken at home by 47.9% of Fillmore residents over age four, so bilingual applicants are realistic; if your relative prefers Spanish, list it as required. With a single licensed home care company in the city according to the CDSS file, most households here end up employing one person directly. Postings and profiles above change as people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Fillmore

Decide which credential the job actually needs. Companionship, meals and help with bathing need no license. Anyone who worked for a licensed home care company had to be listed as a registered home care aide, and you can search that listing. Someone who has worked at Greenfield Care Center, the skilled nursing facility on B Street, or another nursing home may hold a nurse assistant certificate; CDPH lets you confirm its status. IHSS providers enrolled with Ventura County have completed the county orientation and a Live Scan background check, but that clearance belongs to the IHSS program, not to a private job. Phone two former employers, hold the interview in your relative's home, and book one paid trial day with you there. CaregiverConnect does no screening of its own; a background check, if you want one, needs the applicant's written permission and is arranged by you.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Se siente cómoda hablando con mi mamá en español sobre sus medicinas y sus citas?
  • Can you drive my father to Clinicas del Camino Real on Central Avenue or Community Memorial Health Center on West Ventura Street, and how do you want to handle mileage?
  • Have you worked a shift at Greenfield Care Center, Fillmore Country Club or another care home, and what did that job involve?
  • Once Ventura County approves IHSS hours for Mom, are you open to becoming her enrolled provider?
  • Would you go with her to lunch at the Active Adult Center on Santa Clara Street on the days she wants to go?
  • What bathroom equipment, such as a shower chair or grab bars, would make bathing her safer for both of you?
  • Suppose she slipped in the kitchen or suddenly could not tell you the day: what are your first steps?
  • Where do you live, and what time could you realistically arrive on a weekday morning?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Fillmore: hourly rates and schedules

Fillmore households most often ask for weekday shifts of four to eight hours during the working day, early-morning help with bathing and breakfast, and short evening visits for dinner and medication. After a stay at Santa Paula Hospital or a hospital farther away, families often need daily visits for two or three weeks, then fewer. Saturday or Sunday relief for the spouse or adult child who carries the week is another frequent request. A posting that combines tasks, such as personal care plus a trip to the Active Adult Center for lunch, is easier to fill than a single 30-minute visit.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four numbers frame a fair rate in Fillmore. California's $16.90 is the legal minimum, and no city ordinance raises it here. BLS reports a $16.50 median for Ventura County aides as of May 2025. The county pays IHSS providers $20.97 an hour, which experienced local caregivers often use as their reference point. Agencies charge more: $40 an hour is CareScout's 2025 California median. The county offers IHSS to older adults with low incomes and to people with disabilities, so ask whether your relative qualifies before paying for every hour yourself. If you become the employer, California's domestic worker law adds time-and-a-half for an attendant's hours past nine on any one day, plus any hours over 45 that week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
