How to find an in-home caregiver in Paramount

Many Paramount households already lean on a mix of services before they hire anyone. The city has four licensed adult day sites, five home health agencies and a senior center with its own lunch program, so a private caregiver often fills the gaps: the hours before the day program van arrives, the evening after a home health nurse has left, or the weekend when the family needs a break. Spell out which of those gaps you need covered. A post that says "Tuesday and Thursday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., near Alondra and Paramount" tells applicants far more than "help for my mom".

About two in three residents five and older (64.0% in ACS 2020–2024) speak Spanish at home, and 24.9% speak Spanish while rating their English below very well. If your father prefers Spanish, or Tagalog, say it in the first line. Profiles nearest 90723 lead the list below; new caregivers are added as they finish their profiles.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Paramount

Paramount gives you several kinds of applicant to compare. Some will be CNAs or home health aides who also take private shifts; note the certificate number and confirm it in CDPH's online records. Some will be IHSS providers, who already cleared the county's Live Scan and provider orientation. Some will come from SalCare Private Duty or another agency, and any aide an agency sends has to be on the state's aide registry. Many independents will have none of these and may still be excellent, which is why references matter most: phone two former clients or bosses, include your parent in the conversation, and schedule a paid tryout day when a son or daughter can be around. CaregiverConnect has not checked any applicant; your family can buy a background report with the caregiver's written agreement.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • When a home health nurse visits, how would you pass on what you noticed that week?
  • Can you have Dad ready and fed before the C-H or Easterseals pickup?
  • Would you be comfortable booking his rides through the city's GoGo Grandparent line?
  • Have you looked after anyone during dialysis weeks, and what did those days involve?
  • Do you speak Spanish, Tagalog or another language my parents use?
  • If my mother is approved for IHSS, will you enroll as her provider?
  • Mom slips getting out of the tub: what do you do, step by step?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With no Paramount law in UC Berkeley's local wage list, hiring a caregiver yourself means paying at least $16.90 an hour, California's rate; the county's $18.47 covers unincorporated land, not this city. Useful reference points: the $16.50 regional aide median from BLS (May 2025), the $19.64 Los Angeles County IHSS wage, and $40, which CareScout found to be the median agency hour statewide. Personal attendants you employ are owed overtime on any day longer than nine hours and in any week longer than 45. The city's ACS median household income is $75,250. If your parent is on Medi-Cal, ring DPSS on (888) 944-4477 to ask about IHSS while you compare private options, since CDSS ties the program to Medi-Cal eligibility.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Paramount: frequently asked questions

Is there assisted living in Paramount?

Only on a very small scale. CDSS lists one licensed elder care home, Neardale Place on Neardale Street, with room for four residents. The city's bigger residential settings are its three nursing homes, including Meadow Creek on Alondra Boulevard.

Can a home health agency and a private caregiver work together?

Yes. Five CDPH-licensed home health agencies are based in the city. Ask the agency which visits it will make and what it leaves to the family, then hire a caregiver for the daily personal care in between.

How does my mother get to the senior center?

Register her for the city One Card. Taxi and GoGo Grandparent trips to the Paramount Senior Center cost nothing, and other in-town trips cost $1 each way. Call Community Services on (562) 220-2090 to sign up.

What if my father uses a wheelchair and cannot ride the bus?

Apply for Access Services first, then for Dial-A-Lift, which runs curb-to-curb within Paramount, Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill for $2 a trip. Reservations are taken from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.

Can IHSS pay for help in Paramount?

If your parent is eligible, yes: approved hours are paid by the county at $19.64 to the provider your parent chooses. Start with DPSS on (888) 944-4477.

Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers?

No; screening is left to families, who arrange any background, license or reference check. Posting from Paramount is free, and messaging plus hiring come with Family Premium, $24.99 a month.
