How to find an in-home caregiver in El Monte
Put the language first. ACS 2020–2024 counts show Spanish in the homes of 56.5% of El Monte residents aged five or more, Chinese in 15.8% and Vietnamese in 7.0%, and a caregiver who can talk with your parent in that language can explain each task instead of simply doing it. State the dialect if it matters, such as Cantonese rather than Mandarin, and whether you need someone who can also read English letters from Medi-Cal or the doctor.
Post with the 91731 or 91732 ZIP code and the days and hours you need covered. Caregivers whose radius includes El Monte are notified, and those living nearby appear above as they sign up. Because the city has its own 50-cent bus routes, some applicants may come by bus; if the job includes driving your parent, say so, so that only applicants with a car apply.

Evaluating caregivers in El Monte
An applicant may hold any of three checkable credentials. Home care aides employed by agencies are on the CDSS registry, which independents can join too. IHSS providers in Los Angeles County go through an in-person DPSS orientation and state fingerprinting. CNAs are certified by CDPH; Río Hondo College, with a satellite campus inside El Monte, trains them. Check the credential yourself, phone two former clients or employers in whatever language you share, have your parent meet the caregiver, and agree a paid trial shift before a regular schedule. Neither vetting nor background checks are done by CaregiverConnect. A licensed screening company can produce a report once the caregiver gives written permission; a Verified badge on a profile says only that a document was uploaded for us to look at.

- Will you come by El Monte Transit or by car, and how would you get here if the bus is late?
- Has DPSS already enrolled you as an IHSS provider, or would we be your first IHSS client?

What in-home care costs in El Monte: hourly rates and schedules
El Monte postings tend to be weekday mornings or afternoons while adult children are at work, several short visits a week for bathing and meals, a few weeks of help after a stay at a hospital, and weekend cover. Older residents can eat a hot lunch at the Jack Crippen Multipurpose Senior Center on weekdays, and homebound residents can get frozen Meals on Wheels deliveries on Mondays and Wednesdays, which can shorten the hours you pay a caregiver for.

| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
El Monte uses the California minimum wage, $16.90, since the Berkeley Labor Center inventory lists no city ordinance. The county pays IHSS providers $19.64, and CareScout's 2025 survey puts agency homemaker care in California at a median $40 an hour. With a median household income of $68,030 and 19.6% of residents 65 and older below the poverty line (ACS 2020–2024), many El Monte families should check IHSS eligibility before paying privately: the asset ceiling PASC cites is $2,000 for a single applicant, and the home they live in does not count. A live-in or double shift in El Monte quickly runs into overtime, owed past nine hours daily or 45 weekly by the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring safely in El Monte
Even with a caregiver from your own community, write the agreement down: duties, hours, pay, overtime, transport costs and notice, in both languages if that helps everyone. Sign weekly timesheets, keep cash, gold and documents locked away, and watch bank statements. If you suspect a parent is being abused or neglected, call the Los Angeles County hotline, (877) 477-3646. Contracts and payroll are explained in the hiring guide, and the county IHSS guide covers applying.
