Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Santa Paula

The city wrote its own Master Plan for Aging, which the City Council approved unanimously on July 2, 2025, and its survey is a useful read for anyone looking for care work here. Of the 305 residents who answered (263 in English, 42 in Spanish), 45% said Santa Paula does not have enough caregivers, only 9% thought paid caregivers are adequately compensated, and 46% rated more caregiver training as extremely or very important. Among its recommendations, the plan asks the city to work with schools and colleges on introductory caregiving courses, to hold hiring events that connect care employers with job seekers, and to back bilingual caregiver training. None of that is a job offer, but it tells you the town knows it is short of people who do this work.

Language comes first in a local profile. Spanish is the home language for 64.2% of people five and older in ACS 2020–2024, and 81.7% of residents are Hispanic or Latino. If you speak Spanish, put it in the first line; if you speak only English, say which tasks you are strongest at so families can judge the fit. Next is the car. Three in four Santa Paula workers (74.9%) drive alone to work, only 0.2% ride transit, and getting to work averages 27.5 minutes.

About 7.3% of Santa Paula's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. Ventura County as a whole was at 4.7%, below California's 5.3%, so the city sits well above both, and the monthly figure ranged from 5.0% to 10.8% over that year. Paid care for an older neighbor or relative can be steady work through those swings, and IHSS pays a relative or friend the county rate; the Ventura County IHSS guide covers enrollment.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Santa Paula: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County)$16.50 median ($17.88 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 15,250 jobs; concentration 1.7× national
IHSS provider wage, Ventura County$20.97CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County)$22.50 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The metro figures cover all of Ventura County, so read them as a county benchmark rather than a Santa Paula wage. The Labor Center at UC Berkeley tracks no Santa Paula wage ordinance, so private households here owe at least California's $16.90. The IHSS rate of $20.97 sits more than four dollars above the metro aide median, and the city's survey found that most residents think paid caregivers are underpaid, so a request above the median is reasonable for heavy care, nights or dementia work. Households have a median income of $79,294 (ACS 2020–2024) and 10.8% of older residents are counted as poor, so many families will combine a few private hours with IHSS.

How to enroll as a provider in Ventura County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Ventura County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Santa Paula

State rules apply unchanged in Santa Paula. No state license is needed when a Santa Paula family hires you on its own for non-medical help, and you must join the state's aide registry only if a licensed agency puts you on staff, and no such agency is based in Santa Paula according to the state's file. Nursing assistant jobs at the post-acute center or the hospital require CDPH certification. To be paid by IHSS, your client applies through the county (805-654-3236) and you complete the Public Authority's orientation in Ventura or Simi Valley, enrollment forms and a Live Scan check, bringing a government ID and your original Social Security card. Report suspected abuse to the county at any hour on 805-654-3200. Statewide detail is in our requirements guide.

The area

Santa Paula in numbers

The Department of Finance put Santa Paula at 31,976 as of January 1, 2026, and ACS 2020–2024 shows 14.5% aged 65 or over, including 738 people aged 85 and up, and the median age is 35.7. Of 9,653 households, 3,144 (32.6%) include an older person, and 40.8% of older residents report some disability. Only 141 people live in group quarters, so these figures describe ordinary households. Median gross rent is $1,736 and the median home value $611,200. By industry, 11.3% of employed residents work in agriculture and 21.8% in schools, health care and social services.

The health care employers are local. Santa Paula Hospital, a campus of Ventura County Medical Center, is a 49-bed acute hospital on North Tenth Street; obstetrics and intensive care moved to the Ventura campus in October 2024, while the emergency department, inpatient medical unit, surgery, imaging and lab stayed. The county says the 1963 building cannot provide inpatient care past 2030 under state seismic rules, and on August 18, 2026 the Board of Supervisors voted to plan a medical office building and expanded access care center. Santa Paula Post Acute Center on March Street has 99 skilled nursing beds, and CDPH lists two dialysis clinics in town. Nearby pages: Ventura, Oxnard and the Ventura County hub.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Santa Paula: frequently asked questions

Is Santa Paula Hospital closing?

Not now. The county says the hospital and its emergency room are open, but the 1963 building cannot hold inpatients past 2030 under state seismic law. In August 2026 supervisors chose to plan a medical office building and expanded access care center for the site.

Who employs nursing assistants in Santa Paula?

The state listing shows Santa Paula Post Acute Center (99 licensed skilled nursing beds, March Street) and Santa Paula Hospital. Both roles need a CDPH nursing assistant certificate; private home care does not.

What does IHSS pay a Santa Paula provider?

Ventura County sets $20.97 per hour; that rate took effect July 1, 2026. The wage follows the county the client lives in. Travel time between clients, overtime and sick time can be claimed by eligible providers too.

Can I ride the bus to a CNA class for free?

Yes, through June 2027. Valley Express carries students of Ventura County adult schools and the county colleges at no charge when they show a school ID.

Is Spanish required for Santa Paula jobs?

It helps. Nearly two-thirds of residents older than four use Spanish at home, and the city's aging plan asks for more bilingual caregiver training. English-only caregivers should say so plainly in the profile.

Where do Santa Paula families post?

On the Santa Paula family page; new requests show up in the list here. Your profile and every application cost nothing, and no commission is taken.
