How to find an in-home caregiver in Yreka

Yreka has 7,709 residents by the state's January 2026 estimate, and in the 2020–2024 census survey nearly a quarter of them (24.7%) are 65 or older. Of the city's 3,469 households, 784 consist of one person aged 65-plus, most of them women. That is a common reason families look for home care: an older parent who manages most things but needs help with bathing, meals, shopping or getting to Fairchild for appointments.

Because Fairchild, the college's nursing school and several senior programs are all in Yreka, a request posted here can draw applicants from town and from the smaller places around it that STAGE links to Yreka, such as Montague and the Scott Valley towns. Say in the post whether you need a caregiver who drives; in the same survey, 84.2% of Yreka workers drive alone and buses run on weekdays only. Below, profiles from caregivers nearest the address you enter come first; more appear as caregivers register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Yreka

Ask applicants for proof of what they say they hold. Yreka is where College of the Siskiyous trains nurse assistants, so ask a local CNA for the CDPH certificate number. A Siskiyou County IHSS provider has been through Live Scan fingerprinting and Public Authority orientation. The Home Care Aide Registry lists agency staff by requirement and independents only if they chose to register. You can also ask Madrone Senior Services for its caregiver and respite provider list as a starting point, but treat it as a list of names, not a recommendation. Interview in person, phone two references, and pay for a trial visit. CaregiverConnect itself screens no one, and you need the applicant's signature before ordering any background report.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Tell me about a client you helped in the first days after leaving Fairchild Medical Center.
  • Could you drive my mother to the Fairchild clinic on Bruce Street and wait with her?
  • Are you on the Madrone caregiver and respite list, and who else in Yreka have you worked for?
  • The city starts plowing when snow reaches six inches. How would you get here on a snow day?
  • My father may be depressed since my mother died. Would you help him attend Senior Life Solutions groups?
  • Do you have a current CNA certificate, or are you enrolled in the College of the Siskiyous course?
  • Would you sit with my parent at the Community Center lunch, or should we use Madrone's delivery?

What in-home care costs in Yreka: hourly rates and schedules

Short daily visits. One or two hours in the morning or at lunch for an older parent who lives alone, as more than one in five Yreka households is. Appointment days. A half day for a clinic visit, pharmacy and shopping. End-of-life support. Hours alongside a hospice team, so the family can rest.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Privately hired help in Yreka must be paid at least the California minimum of $16.90; UC Berkeley's inventory shows no city wage ordinance. As reference points, the BLS median is $16.50 for aides working anywhere in Siskiyou's ten-county nonmetro area, IHSS pays Siskiyou County providers $16.90, and agency home care costs a $40 hourly median statewide in CareScout's 2025 survey. A personal attendant you employ directly is owed time-and-a-half after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. The city's median household income is $43,982 in the census survey, so check whether IHSS could cover some of the hours. If your parent has Medi-Cal, apply to the county for IHSS before you settle on a private schedule.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
