Finding caregiver jobs in Somerton

Somerton is a city in Yuma County, Arizona, on US-95 between Yuma and the border, with 14,934 residents (Census Bureau, July 2025). The ACS 2020–2024 profile is the most uniformly Hispanic of any place in the county, 95.8%, with 90.5% of residents using a language other than English at home and a median age of 31.3; 11.1% are 65 or older. The Cocopah Indian Tribe's three reservation parcels lie near the city along the Colorado River, with tribal headquarters on Veterans Drive and roughly 1,000 tribal members living on or near the reservation. Postings are for a parent or grandparent inside a working family, in Spanish, in the hours when the adults are in the fields or in Yuma.

What makes Somerton different for a caregiver is training. The Regional Center for Border Health's College of Health Careers on East Main Street runs a three-week, 75-clock-hour Caregiver programme approved for assisted-living work and a six-week, 160-hour Nursing Assistant programme licensed by the Board of Nursing, both of which test students for state certification. Put Spanish first, list the hours you can work around a household's shifts, say whether you drive to Yuma for appointments at Onvida Health, and set a 15-mile radius to take in San Luis, Gadsden and south Yuma. Nobody from Somerton, or anywhere in Yuma County, has a caregiver profile on the platform yet, so early profiles get seen first.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Somerton

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Yuma, AZ metro (Yuma County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Home health and personal care aides, Yuma, AZ metro (Yuma County)$16.61 median ($16.39 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 780 jobs; concentration 0.41× national
Arizona statewide aides (74,540 jobs), median$17.51BLS OEWS, May 2025
Arizona minimum wage$15.15effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Yuma, AZ metro (Yuma County)$18.20 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer. Arizona's minimum wage ($15.15 an hour in 2026) is the legal floor, and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Sources: Industrial Commission of Arizona; US Department of Labor, direct care workers.

The pay table is the Yuma metro series, which covers Somerton; Arizona publishes no city-level caregiver wage and sets no county rate. Somerton's median household income ($74,015 in the ACS) is the highest of the county's cities, above San Luis and the City of Yuma but spread across large households, so private rates tend to sit near the employed median. A CNA certificate from the RCBH college or Arizona Western College moves you towards the $18.20 nursing-assistant median and opens facility work in Yuma. Relatives paid through ALTCS receive the agency rate; a spouse is limited to 40 hours in seven days.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in Arizona, applied to Somerton

A Somerton family that hires you directly for non-medical care is not required by Arizona to see any licence, certificate or state registration. The state's rules apply to licensed employers. Assisted-living caregivers need to be 18, to hold a certificate from an approved course of 62 hours or more (the RCBH programme is 75), to keep CPR and first aid current, and to carry a DPS fingerprint card ($67, six years) under A.A.C. R9-10-806, R4-33-703 and A.R.S. § 36-411. An ALTCS agency has 90 days from hire to get a direct care worker through the AHCCCS tests; someone caring only for a relative skips the Level II specialised modules. A.R.S. § 46-454 makes you a mandated reporter once you are responsible for a vulnerable adult; APS is 1-877-767-2385. The Arizona summary for the whole county is on the Yuma County page; the California programmes described on this site's Imperial County pages do not apply in Somerton.

The area

Somerton in numbers

Somerton had 14,934 residents in July 2025, up from an estimates base of 14,204 in April 2020, so it is growing more slowly than San Luis. The ACS 2020–2024 figures: 11.1% aged 65 or older, 95.8% Hispanic or Latino, 90.5% speaking a language other than English at home, 30.8% speaking English less than very well, median household income $74,015, poverty rate 13.8%. The Cocopah reservation, about 6,500 acres in three separate parcels established in 1917, lies beside the city on the river side; by the tribe's own description it lies 13 miles below Yuma and 15 miles above San Luis, Mexico.

The health infrastructure is unusually good for a city this size because the Regional Center for Border Health is headquartered here: clinics, a behavioural health network, a mobile unit and the health careers college are all on or near Main Street, with Sunset Health's community clinic a few blocks away. What Somerton does not have is a hospital or a senior centre with its own web presence; the Desert Valley Senior Center serves the south county from Somerton, and Onvida Health in Yuma is the hospital. Caregivers from Somerton routinely take work in San Luis and the south side of Yuma, both on the Yellow 95 line.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Somerton: frequently asked questions

Can I get a caregiver certificate in Somerton itself?

Yes. The RCBH College of Health Careers on East Main Street runs the state-approved 75-hour Caregiver programme and a 160-hour Nursing Assistant programme; you need a diploma or GED, to be 18, and a fingerprint clearance card.

Do I need that certificate to work for a Somerton family?

No. Private non-medical care needs no licence or certificate in Arizona. The certificate matters for assisted-living and agency jobs, and it helps families trust a profile.
