Finding caregiver jobs in Yuma County

Yuma County is a single caregiving market with two very different halves. West and south of the city, San Luis and Somerton are young, overwhelmingly Hispanic farm and border towns where only one resident in ten is over 65 and care is arranged in Spanish inside large families. East of the city, Fortuna Foothills and Wellton are retirement country: 45.3% of Foothills residents and 52.1% of Wellton residents are 65 or older (ACS 2020–2024), and from December to May the Arizona State University winter-visitor study counted about 71,000 seasonal residents staying 30 days or more, nearly all of them retired, with a mean age in the mid-60s.

Formal home-care employment is thin here: the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 780 home health and personal care aides in the Yuma metro in May 2025, a concentration of 0.41 against a national average of 1.00. Relatives, some paid through ALTCS, and privately hired caregivers do most of the work. No caregivers have joined from Yuma County yet, so an early profile here faces little competition for the first postings. Put your ZIP, whether you drive, whether you take seasonal assignments and whether you speak Spanish at the top of your profile.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Yuma County

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Yuma, AZ metro (Yuma County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer. Arizona's minimum wage ($15.15 an hour in 2026) is the legal floor, and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Sources: Industrial Commission of Arizona; US Department of Labor, direct care workers.

Arizona sets no county caregiver wage. The floor is the state minimum of $15.15 an hour (Industrial Commission of Arizona, from 1 January 2026); employed aides in the metro earn a median of $16.61, and the statewide aide median is $17.51. A relative paid through ALTCS is paid by the agency or, under Self-Directed Attendant Care, through a fiscal employer agent at the plan's rate, and a spouse cannot be paid for more than 40 hours in any seven-day period (AMPM Policy 1240-A). Privately agreed rates run above the employed median for personal care, nights and driving.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in Arizona, applied to Yuma County

Arizona regulates settings, not individuals. A caregiver a family hires directly for non-medical help needs no state licence, registration or minimum training. The rules start when an employer is involved: assisted living facilities must use caregivers who are 18 or older, have completed a Department of Health Services-approved caregiver training programme, hold current first aid and adult CPR, and comply with the fingerprint-card statute (A.A.C. R9-10-806; A.R.S. § 36-411). Approved programmes run at least 62 hours (A.A.C. R4-33-703). Agencies serving ALTCS members in their own homes must have direct care workers pass the AHCCCS standardised tests within 90 days of hire; nurses, CNAs and trained assisted-living caregivers are exempt. Everyone responsible for a vulnerable adult is a mandated reporter (A.R.S. § 46-454); Adult Protective Services is 1-877-767-2385. None of California's IHSS, Home Care Aide Registry or Domestic Worker Bill of Rights rules reach across the river into Arizona; they are described for cross-border comparison only on the Imperial County page.

The area

Yuma County in numbers

The Census Bureau estimated 224,449 residents on 1 July 2025, up from 205,006 in the April 2020 estimates base, with the City of Yuma at 105,227, San Luis at 42,030, Somerton at 14,934 and Wellton at 2,671; Fortuna Foothills, a census-designated place, had 28,896 in the 2020–2024 ACS. Countywide, 20.7% of residents are 65 or older, 64.9% are Hispanic or Latino, 55.5% use a language other than English at home (53.3% Spanish) and the median household income is $62,876. The ASU study's 71,000 winter visitors sit on top of these figures.

For a caregiver the geography matters more than the totals. Yuma holds the hospital, the college and most of the services; the Foothills is an unincorporated strip along I-8 with its own emergency department and library but no town government; San Luis and Somerton lie south-west down US-95 with clinics but no hospital; Wellton is 29 miles east by the town's own reckoning. Across the Colorado River, Imperial County operates under California law, where IHSS pays $18.83 an hour; that is a comparison, not a rule that applies here.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Yuma County: frequently asked questions

Which Yuma County towns have their own caregiver job page?

Yuma, Fortuna Foothills, San Luis, Somerton and Wellton. Gadsden, Tacna, Dateland and Avenue B and C are described above and served by the nearest town page; postings from all of them appear in the county list.

How wide should I set my travel radius?

From the city, 15 miles reaches the Foothills, Somerton and Avenue B and C; 25 miles adds San Luis; Wellton needs about 30.

Can a relative be paid to care for someone in Yuma County?

Yes, if the person qualifies for ALTCS. The programme contractor for the county, Banner – University Family Care, can pay a relative through a home-care agency or let the member employ a family member directly under Self-Directed Attendant Care; a spouse is paid only via an agency and never for more than 40 hours in a week, and a parent cannot be paid for a minor child.

Do I need Spanish for the south county?

In San Luis, Somerton and Gadsden, yes in practice: nine households in ten speak Spanish and many older residents speak little English. In the Foothills and Wellton the working language is English.

What about caregivers living on the California side?

Winterhaven lies just across the Colorado River from Yuma and YCAT's Turquoise 10 runs to El Centro, but California's IHSS programme and wage rules stop at the river. The Imperial County page covers that side; this page is Arizona only.
