How to find an in-home caregiver in Alpine County
Alpine County had 1,183 residents in the Department of Finance's January 2026 estimate and no incorporated city. Its communities, as the county's draft 2025 transportation plan lists them, are Markleeville, Woodfords, Alpine Village, Mesa Vista, Kirkwood and Bear Valley, plus the tribal community of Hung A Lel Ti near Woodfords. With so few residents, you may find that the right person is a neighbor, a relative who enrolls as your parent's IHSS provider, or someone from just across the county line. Be clear in your post about the community, the hours and whether you need winter coverage.
No licensed home care agency, nursing home or assisted living facility appears at an Alpine County address in the state's files, so nearly all help at home is arranged privately or through IHSS. English is the only home language for 84.1% of residents five and older in ACS 2020–2024. Profiles closest to your ZIP code appear first.

Types of in-home care families in Alpine County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Alpine County
Confirm what you are told. An IHSS provider has been through the state enrollment steps, including Department of Justice fingerprinting, which in Alpine County is done at the Sheriff's Department in Markleeville. The Home Care Aide Registry lists aides who work for licensed agencies. Ask for two references and call them, introduce your parent to the people you shortlist, and pay for a trial visit before you commit. CaregiverConnect does not confirm identity, check criminal records or call references; a background report is something your family arranges with the applicant's signed consent.

- How would you handle a medical emergency during a visit?

| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode nonmetro area (includes Alpine County) | $16.52 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Alpine County | $17.85 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Weigh four figures when you set pay. California's minimum wage is $16.90, and UC Berkeley's inventory lists no local ordinance in Alpine County. In the seven-county nonmetro area that includes Alpine, BLS found a $16.52 median for home health and personal care aides in May 2025. Alpine County pays IHSS providers $17.85 an hour from July 1, 2026. CareScout's 2025 survey gives a $40 statewide median for an hour of agency home care, though no agency is licensed in the county. A personal attendant you employ directly is owed time and a half beyond nine hours a day or 45 a week. Because IHSS depends on Medi-Cal eligibility, ask Health and Human Services, (530) 694-2235, whether your parent qualifies before you settle a budget.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
