How to find an in-home caregiver in Calaveras County

Fewer than one resident in twelve lives in a city here: of the county's 44,678 people (DOF, January 2026), 41,165 live in unincorporated communities. That spread matters more than anything else when you hire. One in Wilseyville, Rail Road Flat or a ranch property outside Copperopolis may draw fewer applicants, so offer longer visits or mileage pay. Mention any appointments the caregiver would need to drive to.

The choice of agencies is limited. State files list no licensed home care organization in Calaveras (CDSS, May 2025) and no home health agency or hospice (CDPH). Caregiver profiles below are ordered by distance from your ZIP and change as new people sign up.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Calaveras County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Calaveras County

Sort out credentials first, rates second. An enrolled Calaveras County IHSS provider has passed a Justice Department fingerprint check through the Public Authority. Registry providers have also been interviewed and given three references. Independent caregivers may choose to join the Home Care Aide Registry; agency aides have to. CDPH certifies nursing assistants. Phone the references yourself, introduce your parent to the two or three strongest applicants, and try one paid visit with a relative in the house. Our platform verifies no one's identity, credentials or history. If you want a background report, ask the applicant for written consent and order one yourself.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town are you coming from, and how many minutes is the trip to us?
  • Have you looked after a client released from Mark Twain Medical Center or a stay at the San Andreas nursing home?
  • Are you enrolled with the Calaveras County Public Authority, or are you on its registry?
  • Could you book a Direct Connect ride for my mother and go with her if your car is unavailable?
  • Is your auto insurance in order for driving a client to clinics in San Andreas, Angels Camp or Valley Springs?
  • Suppose my father slid out of his chair and was too heavy for you. Walk me through your next steps.
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Calaveras County: hourly rates and schedules

Near San Andreas, Angels Camp and Valley Springs. Morning help with bathing and breakfast, an early-evening visit for supper and pills, and the occasional clinic run. Coming home from the hospital. Long days or nights until a parent is steady again. Farther out, in Arnold, West Point or rural Copperopolis. Two or three long shifts a week usually work better than daily short visits, because a caregiver who drives a long way for one hour loses much of the pay to the trip.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Before you agree on an hourly figure, compare these. California's minimum wage is $16.90, and UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory shows no higher local rate in Calaveras County. In May 2025, BLS reported a $16.52 median for aides in the seven-county Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode area. The county pays IHSS providers $17.89, and CareScout's 2025 agency median for California was $40 an hour. As the direct employer of a personal attendant, you pay 1.5 times the rate beyond 9 hours daily or 45 weekly. For a parent who is on Medi-Cal, or might be, ring (209) 754-6448 early: county-approved IHSS hours, which also need a physician's certification, may pay for some of what you need.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Calaveras County: frequently asked questions

How do we start IHSS for a parent in Calaveras County?

Call Health and Human Services on (209) 754-6448 and ask for an IHSS referral, or apply in person at an outstation. County eligibility rules: the applicant is aged 65+, blind or disabled, has been found eligible for Medi-Cal, and has a physician sign the Health Care Certification form.

Can a family member be the paid IHSS provider?

Yes. The IHSS recipient is the employer and chooses who to hire. The relative enrolls with the Public Authority online, passes the background check and is paid $17.89 an hour for authorized hours. For help finding a provider, the Public Authority can be reached on (209) 754-6544.

Is there help for families who do not qualify for Medi-Cal?

Area 12 Agency on Aging offers short-term homemaker, chore and personal care help to people 60 and over, with priority for those 75 and older, isolated or in the greatest need. Call (209) 532-6272.

Who gives family caregivers a break?

Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center can pay for respite at home or at a day program for eligible families, and also offers counseling and support groups. Area 12 runs a family caregiver support program as well. Both are free.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers?

No. Families do their own vetting; we check no backgrounds, licenses or references. Posting is free. To message applicants and lock in a hire, upgrade to Family Premium ($24.99 monthly).

My mother no longer drives. What rides are there?

Direct Connect picks riders up at home on weekdays if they book by 3 p.m. the day before, and Area 12 provides bus tickets for medical trips to riders 60 and over who have physical or cognitive limitations.
