How to find an in-home caregiver in Amador County
Older adults are in close to half of all homes here. The ACS 2020–2024 tables find someone aged 65 or more in 7,528 Amador households, 46.8% of the total, and a disability among one in three people of that age. Families usually take one of three routes: an IHSS provider, paid by the county when the person receiving care has Medi-Cal; a private caregiver whom the family employs; or an agency. Agencies are scarce. Community Care Licensing's May 2025 data show just two licensed home care organizations in Amador, and both are in Jackson.
Who answers your post depends on where you live. Sutter Amador Hospital and the three home health agencies are in Jackson, while the county's social services office uses a Sutter Creek address. Homes along the Highway 88 bus corridor or near Plymouth and Ione can draw fewer applicants, so consider longer shifts or a mileage allowance. The profiles below are listed nearest first.

- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.

- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Amador County
Find out which credentials an applicant really has. Anyone enrolled as an Amador IHSS provider has been fingerprinted and cleared by the state Justice Department; registry providers have, in addition, completed the Public Authority's assessment and supplied four references. Listing on the separate state Home Care Aide Registry is compulsory for agency-employed home care aides and a matter of choice for independents; CDPH certifies nursing assistants. Make the reference calls yourself, invite your two or three favorites to meet your parent, and pay for one try-out visit before the regular schedule starts. We do not screen applicants or confirm licenses. A background report is something you can order on your own once the applicant has agreed in writing.
Questions families here ask at interview

- Have you looked after anyone who came home from Sutter Amador Hospital or from rehab at Kit Carson in Jackson?
- Are you an enrolled Amador IHSS provider, and has the Public Authority put you on its referral list?
- Can you help my mother apply for Dial-a-Ride, or ride along on Amador Transit to her appointments?
- Does your auto policy cover trips with a client to Jackson, Martell or Sacramento?
- If my father would not take his pills for two days in a row, how would you handle it?
What in-home care costs in Amador County: hourly rates and schedules
Jackson, Sutter Creek and Martell. Short morning visits for bathing, breakfast and medication, and afternoon trips to clinics or the senior lunch. The first weeks home from the hospital. Full days, sometimes nights, tapering off as recovery goes on. Ione, Plymouth and the Highway 88 communities. These homes are usually better served by a couple of long shifts each week, since an hour-long visit barely covers a caregiver's travel.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode nonmetro area (includes Amador County) | $16.52 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Amador County | $19.40 | CDSS; effective August 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Use four reference points when you decide what to pay. No Amador city or the county has its own wage law in UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory, leaving the state's $16.90 as the floor. Aides in BLS's seven-county Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode area had a $16.52 median in May 2025. IHSS providers in Amador earn $19.40 an hour as of August 1, 2026, and agencies across California charged a $40 median, according to CareScout's 2025 survey. Employing a personal attendant directly means paying 1.5 times the base wage once the caregiver passes nine hours on a single workday or 45 in one workweek. For a parent on Medi-Cal, or one who might qualify, ask about IHSS before anything else: phone (209) 223-6550 and request an IHSS social worker.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Amador County: frequently asked questions
How do we apply for IHSS for a parent in Amador County?
Phone (209) 223-6550 and ask for an IHSS social worker, who will check eligibility. CDSS requires a California resident who has a Medi-Cal eligibility determination and lives at home or in a residence picked by the applicant; CDSS does not count hospitals or licensed care facilities as such a residence.
Can a relative be paid as the IHSS provider in Amador County?
Yes. A family member or friend the recipient chooses contacts the Public Authority, (209) 223-6781, completes enrollment and the state orientation, and clears the background check. Authorized hours are then paid at the Amador rate of $19.40.
Will the Public Authority find a caregiver for us?
Only if someone is free. Its FAQ says the registry writes to you when it has a provider to refer and is not obliged to place one, so keep looking through friends, neighbors and local notices in the meantime.
Is there in-home help for seniors who are not on Medi-Cal?
Yes, on a short-term basis. Area 12 provides temporary household, chore and personal care assistance free to residents 60 and older, prioritizing those over 75, living alone or with the greatest need. Ask on (209) 532-6272.
Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers in Amador County?
No. Each Amador family vets its own applicants; CaregiverConnect performs no screening of any kind. Putting up a request costs nothing, and Family Premium ($24.99 monthly) is what opens messaging and hiring.
