How to find an in-home caregiver in Bishop

Bishop is a small place with a larger orbit. State estimates for January 1, 2026 put 3,852 people inside the city, while the city estimates the whole Bishop area at roughly 10,000. Your parent may live inside city limits or elsewhere in the Bishop area, and so may the caregivers who apply, so say exactly where the home is.

ACS 2020–2024 counts 1,060 Bishop residents aged 65 or older and finds someone in that age group in 38.6% of the city's households. Spanish is spoken at home by about one resident in nine, so note it in the post if Spanish is your parent's first language. New caregiver profiles near 93514 are listed on this page as they join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Bishop

Applicants in Bishop tend to come with one of three backgrounds, and each can be checked. A CNA has a California certificate from CDPH; Cerro Coso's Bishop campus teaches the course. Someone already working in IHSS got through the state's enrollment process, with fingerprints and an orientation from Community Service Solutions, whose registry office is on West Line Street. Someone who has worked at Bishop Care Center, Northern Inyo Hospital or Pioneer Home Health Care can usually name a supervisor you can call. Ask for two references, call both, and book a paid trial visit while you are there. CaregiverConnect itself checks no one's record or license, so how far to verify is your call, and a background report on an applicant requires that person's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Are you inside Bishop or out of town, and how fast could you reach us if Mom has a fall?
  • Have you helped someone come home from Northern Inyo Hospital or a rehab stay at Bishop Care Center?
  • Will you take Dad to his Pioneer Lane appointments yourself, or set up CAREshuttle or Dial-a-Ride for him?
  • Have you signed up with Community Service Solutions as an IHSS provider yet?
  • Could you walk her over to the Spruce Street lunch and keep her company?
  • Is Spanish one of your languages, and how much dementia care have you done?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Bishop: hourly rates and schedules

Some families use the senior center lunch or the adult day program for part of the day and hire help for the hours before and after. Evenings. Dial-a-Ride runs late on Fridays and Saturdays, which can help a caregiver without a car get home. Coming home from Pioneer Lane. Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Bishop sets no wage of its own (UC Berkeley's local ordinance list has no entry for it), so California's own minimum, $16.90 an hour, is what you must pay at least. The BLS median for home care aides in the nonmetro area that includes Bishop is $16.52, but a private hire must still be paid at least the state minimum. Inyo County pays its IHSS providers $17.65. CareScout's 2025 statewide survey found agencies charging a median of $40 hourly; with no licensed home care organization on file for Inyo County, Bishop families usually hire directly. Employing a personal attendant directly makes overtime your job: time-and-a-half applies to every hour over nine on a given day and over 45 in a given week. A parent on Medi-Cal may qualify for county-paid IHSS hours; see the Inyo County page for how to apply.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
