How to find an in-home caregiver in Inyo County

The first question for an Inyo County family is distance. Of the county's 18,780 residents, 3,852 live inside Bishop, the only incorporated city, and the rest are spread across census-designated places, among them West Bishop, Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek, Lone Pine, Big Pine, Independence, Tecopa and Shoshone. The county measures its area at 10,140 square miles. A caregiver who already lives nearby is often worth more than a longer resume, so put the community name in the post along with whether driving is part of the job.

Expect few applicants. ACS 2020–2024 counts 4,675 county residents aged 65 or older, nearly a quarter of the population. After English, Spanish is the language most often spoken at home in the county (15.7% of those five and older), so flag it if Spanish is easier for your parent.

Evaluating caregivers in Inyo County

Anyone working as an Inyo County IHSS provider has passed state enrollment: Justice Department fingerprinting, the Community Service Solutions orientation and the SOC 846 provider agreement. Nursing assistants hold a CDPH certificate, and Cerro Coso's Eastern Sierra College Center offers the course locally. Registry enrollment is for aides on an agency payroll, and since the state shows no licensed agency in the county, expect independent applicants. Call two past employers, introduce your parent to the best two candidates, and pay for one trial shift first. Identity, criminal history and references are not checked by CaregiverConnect; a family that wants a background report orders one itself, with written permission from the applicant.

  • Can you speak Spanish with her, and have you done so with a client before?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Set the private wage against four local benchmarks. California's floor is $16.90 per hour; UC Berkeley finds no Inyo town with a higher local minimum. The seven-county BLS area that includes Inyo paid home care aides a $16.52 median. Inyo County IHSS providers earn $17.65. Across California, CareScout's 2025 figures show agencies billing a $40 median hour, though Inyo has no licensed agency of its own. When you directly employ a personal attendant, the law requires time-and-a-half for a workday that stretches past nine hours, or a workweek past 45. IHSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, so a parent on Medi-Cal should call Senior Services/IHSS, (760) 873-6364, before you settle a budget, since authorized county hours can pay for some of the help.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Inyo County: frequently asked questions

How do we apply for IHSS in Inyo County?

Call Senior Services/IHSS on (760) 873-6364, visit the Aging and Social Services office in Bishop or Lone Pine, or start through BenefitsCal. CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination first; then a county social worker makes a home visit, works out which tasks your parent cannot safely do alone and sets the authorized hours.

May I become my father's paid IHSS caregiver?

It can, once he is approved and names the relative as his provider. Community Service Solutions guides you through the SOC 426, fingerprints, orientation and the SOC 846, which must all be finished inside 90 days. Inyo County pays $17.65 an hour.

Is there assisted living in Inyo County?

None is open. In CDSS's May 25, 2025 file the county's one elderly residential care listing, in Bishop, shows as closed. For 24-hour nursing care, the county has Bishop Care Center and the skilled nursing unit at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine.

Who helps a family member who is burning out?

ESAAA's Family Caregiver Support Program offers assessments, counseling and respite to unpaid caregivers; call (760) 873-6364. The Inland Caregiver Resource Center, on (800) 675-6694, also takes Inyo County families.

How does my father get to a specialist out of the area?

ESAAA arranges assisted transportation for seniors who need help because of physical or cognitive limits, mostly for out-of-area medical care. The county gives a Bishop-to-Reno trip as an example costing about $387, with a suggested donation of half the cost; call (760) 873-5240.

Are caregivers on CaregiverConnect vetted?

Not by us. Background, license and reference checks are up to your family. Posting a request costs nothing. To exchange messages and hire, upgrade to the $24.99-a-month Family Premium.
