Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Inyo County
Inyo County is large and thinly populated. The county gives its area as 10,140 square miles, with 92.0% of the land federally owned, 3.9% owned by the City of Los Angeles and 1.7% private. The Department of Finance counted 18,780 residents on January 1, 2026. Bishop, with 3,852, is the only incorporated city; Independence is the county seat. Everyone else lives in census-designated places, the largest being Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (2,780), West Bishop (2,754), Lone Pine (2,014) and Big Pine (1,875) at the 2020 Census.
In practice, care work centers on two towns. Bishop has Northern Inyo Hospital, the main county Aging and Social Services office and the provider registry; Lone Pine has Southern Inyo Hospital, its 33-bed nursing unit and a second county office. ACS 2020–2024 counts 4,675 residents aged 65 or older, 24.9% of the county, and about 1,458 households where someone aged 65-plus lives alone. A strong Inyo profile names every community you can get to each week and states plainly whether you can drive clients to the doctor.

Types of caregiver jobs in Inyo County
Private requests here are mostly non-medical: personal care, meals, housekeeping, errands and rides. IHSS is the other large source of home care work; the county sets the hours, the client picks the provider, and a relative can qualify. Facility and agency jobs sit with a few employers: the Southern Inyo hospital and nursing unit in Lone Pine and, in Bishop, Northern Inyo Hospital, Bishop Care Center, the Owens Valley hospice and Pioneer Home Health Care. Private and IHSS work need no license, which makes them the usual first step.
- Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
- Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
- Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
- Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
- Overnight: supervision through the night.
- Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Caregiver pay in Inyo County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Inyo and six other counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Inyo and six other counties) | $16.52 median ($17.48 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 2,220 jobs; concentration 1.27× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Inyo County | $17.65 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Inyo and six other counties) | $22.79 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
BLS reports Inyo County only as part of the seven-county Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode nonmetro area, with Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa, Mono and Tuolumne. The May 2025 survey there counted 2,220 workers in the occupation (home health and personal care aides), whose median pay was $16.52, and 330 nursing assistants with a $22.79 median. The county's IHSS rate, $17.65 since New Year 2026, sits 75 cents above California's minimum. No Inyo town has a wage law of its own on UC Berkeley's list, meaning private employers owe at least $16.90, and a personal attendant is due overtime once the day's work tops nine hours or the week's tops 45.
About 4.5% of Inyo County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, comfortably under California's 5.3%, with single months as low as 3.7% and as high as 5.1%. Care work therefore competes with other local jobs, and the steady weekly hours of an Inyo County IHSS provider are part of its appeal.
How to enroll as a provider in Inyo County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Inyo County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Inyo County
California asks nothing of a caregiver whom an Inyo County household employs directly for non-medical tasks. Only an agency hire is obliged to enter the Home Care Aide Registry, and the CDSS licensing data contain no home care organization with an address in the county. Health and Human Services handles IHSS cases (Senior Services/IHSS, (760) 873-6364). Provider enrollment goes through Community Service Solutions, an Eastern Sierra nonprofit that has overseen the Inyo County IHSS Provider Registry since 2021. CSS gives you 90 days to finish the SOC 426 steps: return the signed form, clear the Live Scan check, attend orientation, then sign the SOC 846 agreement. Expect hospital and nursing-unit aide postings to ask for CDPH nurse assistant certification. Anyone paid to care for an elder must report suspected abuse.
