Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Bishop

The City of Bishop describes itself as a small city on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, at about 4,100 feet, covering slightly less than two square miles. Northern Inyo Healthcare District places it at the northern end of Inyo County, in the Owens Valley, where Highway 395 meets U.S. Route 6. Its January 2026 population, per the state Department of Finance, was 3,852, yet the city says the wider Bishop area holds roughly 10,000 people, so many households you would serve sit just outside city limits. The city calls itself the region's main commercial and population hub, and the hospital, nursing home, home health agency, hospice, college campus and IHSS registry are all here.

Bishop has a large older population. ACS 2020–2024 counts 1,060 residents aged 65 or older, 28.1% of the city (the survey margin is about five points either way), and 38.6% of its 2,133 households include someone in that age group. Those are the clients who ask for a few hours of help with bathing, meals and errands. Make three things clear in a Bishop profile: how far outside the city you go, whether hands-on personal care is part of what you offer, and whether you have a car for clinic trips.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Bishop: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Inyo County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Inyo County)$16.52 median ($17.48 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 2,220 jobs; concentration 1.27× national
IHSS provider wage, Inyo County$17.65CDSS; effective January 1, 2026

Nursing assistants, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Inyo County)$22.79 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

EDD's small-area estimate for Bishop is not reliable: its figure sits far below every neighboring area, an effect of how EDD splits county totals among small places. The better guide is the county: about 4.5% of Inyo County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, measured against 5.3% for California. Steady hours therefore count, and an Inyo County IHSS case pays $17.65 an hour from January 1, 2026. IHSS pay depends on where the client lives, so an IHSS client over the county line in Mono earns you Mono's $17.95 instead. For private jobs the minimum is $16.90, the state rate; UC Berkeley's ordinance list does not include Bishop. The BLS area that includes Bishop reports a $16.52 median for home care aides and $22.79 for nursing assistants. Northern Inyo Healthcare District lists health, dental and vision cover and paid time off from 200 hours a year.

How to enroll as a provider in Inyo County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Inyo County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Bishop in numbers

Rent in Bishop runs higher than county-wide: ACS 2020–2024 puts the city's median gross rent at $1,580, against $1,189 for Inyo County, and 58.3% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Spanish is spoken at home by 11.2% of residents aged five and over. Workers average a 16.1-minute commute. Bishop is far from large cities: the city gives Reno as about 200 miles away and Los Angeles and Las Vegas as about 270, with Mammoth Lakes some 40 miles off.

That distance shapes care. The hospital district's free CAREshuttle covers patients' medical trips inside a 60-mile radius, but everyday errands, pharmacy runs and visits fall outside it, and that is where a caregiver with a car is most useful. For county-wide offices and the Lone Pine nursing unit, see the Inyo County page; for work to the north, the Mammoth Lakes page.

Who hires nursing assistants in Bishop?

What does IHSS pay a Bishop provider?

Why is there no Bishop unemployment figure on this page?

EDD estimates small cities by splitting county totals, and its Bishop result is far out of line with every nearby area, so we do not repeat it. Inyo County as a whole averaged 4.5% over the year to August 2026.

How do Bishop families find me?

Each request a family enters on the Bishop family page then shows up among the postings above. Building a profile and applying cost you nothing, and every dollar a family pays you stays yours.
