How to find an in-home caregiver in Ceres

Ceres is a city of 49,075 residents on Modesto's southern border, and a parent here is usually cared for at home by family, by a private caregiver or through IHSS. The May 2025 CDSS licensing files show only one licensed home care organization in the city and two small residential care homes for the elderly with 14 beds between them, so hiring someone yourself is the normal route rather than the fallback. Because the two cities touch, caregivers who live in south or central Modesto can reach most Ceres streets as easily as local ones, which widens the pool you can draw from.

Start with language. Six in ten Ceres residents aged five or more (59.9%) use a language besides English at home, nearly half of them Spanish speakers, and about one in four has limited English, according to ACS 2020–2024. A smaller group uses languages such as those the Census calls "other Indo-European", so say exactly which one your parent needs. Name the language, the ZIP code (95307), the days and the main tasks in the first lines, and say whether the caregiver must drive.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Ceres

Ask what each applicant holds and check it yourself. Anyone enrolled as a Stanislaus County IHSS provider has sat the provider orientation and cleared a DOJ fingerprint check, and StanLink2Care screens its registry caregivers again before referral. Nurse assistant certificates are listed publicly by CDPH, and Home Care Aide Registry status can be looked up through CDSS. Phone two people the applicant has worked for, hold the interview at your parent's home in Ceres, and book one paid trial shift before you commit to regular hours. CaregiverConnect performs no background checks, identity checks or vetting; if you want a background report, get the caregiver's written consent and order it yourself.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Puede cuidar a mi madre en español todo el día, incluso con el médico?
  • Do you live in Ceres or south Modesto, and how long would it take you to reach us on Whitmore Avenue?
  • Have you cared for someone who went to dialysis three times a week?
  • Could you take my father to the Golden Valley clinic on Memorial Drive and stay with him during the visit?
  • Have you worked with a client after a stay at a post-acute or skilled nursing center?
  • If the county approves IHSS hours for my mother, will you sign up as her provider?
  • What would you do if my grandmother, who is raising my children with me, became unwell while they were home?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Ceres: hourly rates and schedules

Ceres families tend to post weekday daytime hours that match their own work shifts, often starting early, since Ceres workers average a 33.8-minute commute (ACS), plus short evening visits for dinner and medication. Weekend relief for a spouse is common, as is a short run of daily visits once a parent is discharged from a nursing facility. Where grandparents help raise children at home, families sometimes want a caregiver who is comfortable around a busy household.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Caregivers here set their own rates. Three markers help you judge an offer in Ceres: the California minimum of $16.90 (the city has no local wage ordinance in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory), the $18.75 Stanislaus County IHSS has paid since July 1, 2026, and CareScout's $40 statewide median for agency home care. Older Ceres residents have a poverty rate of 18.9% (ACS 2020–2024), so check IHSS before paying privately: if your parent has no Medi-Cal yet, the county says a Family Services Specialist can visit to help with that application. Under the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, a personal attendant is paid overtime past nine hours of work in one day or 45 hours in one week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
