How to find an in-home caregiver in Modesto
Start with a free posting under your parent's Modesto ZIP code that lists the tasks, the days, the hours and anything about the house a caregiver should know, such as stairs, pets or a wheelchair. Caregivers whose travel radius covers that address are notified and can apply, and nearby caregiver profiles show up above once published. Some applicants live in Modesto; others drive in from Ceres, Riverbank or Turlock, so ask each one where they are coming from and how long it takes at the hour you need them.
Name the hospital and doctors involved. A family whose father is coming home from Memorial on Coffee Road, Doctors on Florida Avenue or Kaiser on Dale Road wants someone ready for that first week. Say which language your parent prefers too: 37.1% of Modesto residents aged five and older speak something other than English at home, most often Spanish (26.9%), per ACS 2020–2024, and 3.7% speak an Asian or Pacific Island language.

Evaluating caregivers in Modesto
Ask which of three credentials the applicant holds, then check it. IHSS providers enrolled with Stanislaus County have completed the state orientation and Live Scan fingerprints; those referred through StanLink2Care have also passed its interview and caregiver class, and if your parent is their IHSS employer the registry can share background check information with you. The state Home Care Aide Registry lists agency aides and independents who register. CNAs are certified by CDPH, many through Modesto Junior College. After that, phone two people the caregiver has worked for, have your parent join the conversation when you interview, get written consent for any background report and book a paid trial shift. We do not screen applicants or check their backgrounds at CaregiverConnect, and the Verified badge reflects a document upload, nothing more.

| IHSS provider wage, Stanislaus County | $18.75 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Modesto follows the California minimum wage of $16.90; the Labor Center inventory lists no local ordinance for the city. The county Area Agency on Aging gives $16 to $30 an hour as the private-pay range for in-home help, usually with a minimum of three or four hours a visit. Stanislaus County pays IHSS providers $18.75, aides in the metro earn a $16.50 median (BLS, May 2025), and California agencies charge a $40 median. With a city median household income of $79,891 (ACS 2020–2024), many families mix a few paid private hours with IHSS, the PACE center or family help. Overtime applies after 9 hours a day or 45 a week.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
