How to find an in-home caregiver in Grass Valley

Grass Valley is home to 13,238 people by the state's January 2026 estimate, and close to a third of them are 65 or older (31.8% in ACS 2020–2024). The figure that best explains requests for home care is household make-up: In 1,871 Grass Valley households the only resident is a woman 65 or older; in another 322 it is a man of that age. Most homes in the city are rented; owners occupy only 40.2%.

Applicants for a Grass Valley post are likely to live in the city or in the western Nevada County communities that Sierra College lists for its Grass Valley campus, such as Nevada City, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, Lake of the Pines and Chicago Park. Grass Valley workers average a 16.9-minute commute, so short visits are practical for someone living nearby. Your Grass Valley post should state whether rides are expected, which days count most and whether bathing or toileting is part of it. Profiles nearest your address appear below and the list grows as caregivers sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Grass Valley

Check each claim an applicant makes. A CNA who has worked at one of the four Grass Valley nursing facilities should give you a certificate number you can look up with CDPH. An IHSS provider in Nevada County has completed Live Scan and the Public Authority's enrollment. Home Care Aide Registry enrollment is compulsory for aides placed by an agency and a choice for independent Grass Valley caregivers. Connecting Point keeps a registry of IHSS providers and publishes suggested interview questions, both worth using if your relative qualifies for IHSS. Meet in person, call at least two former employers, and pay for a supervised trial shift before setting a regular schedule. Vetting is your job: CaregiverConnect performs no background or credential checks.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • After a Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital stay, how would you organize my father's first week back home?
  • Could you take my father to his Western Sierra Medical Clinic appointment on Old Tunnel Road and stay through the visit?
  • My mother has early dementia. Have you used any of the Alzheimer's Outreach Program classes or worked with a family who did?
  • Could you bring her to the Monday noon meal on Colfax Avenue and stay until she feels at ease?
  • If hospice starts, are you comfortable working alongside the Hospice of the Foothills nurse and aide?
  • Will you drive here in your own car, or come on the Route 3 bus?
  • Have you worked in Golden Empire, Crystal Ridge, Spring Hill Manor or Wolf Creek, and can I call a supervisor there?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

When you hire a caregiver directly in Grass Valley, the floor is $16.90 an hour, California's minimum, because UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory lists nothing for the city. For comparison, Nevada County IHSS providers earn $18.50, aides in the ten-county rural BLS area have a $16.50 median, and agency home care runs a $40 hourly median statewide (CareScout, 2025). State overtime rules reach Grass Valley living rooms too: a personal attendant you employ earns 1.5 times the rate for any hours over nine on one day and over 45 across the week. Grass Valley's median household income is $51,764 in the census survey and 17.5% of residents 65 and over have incomes under the poverty level. Ask early whether IHSS could pay for some hours; it depends on a Medi-Cal eligibility determination.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Grass Valley: frequently asked questions

Is there a senior lunch in Grass Valley?

At the Sierra Gold Community Senior Center, 231 Colfax Avenue, between Diego's Restaurant and Prosperity Lanes. A hot lunch is served at noon three days a week to anyone 60 or older; first-time visitors fill in a short participant form.

Is there free help for a family caring for someone with dementia?

Yes. The Alzheimer's Outreach Program at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital charges nothing for crisis support, case management, caregiver classes such as its Essential Tools for Caregivers series, and help finding respite. Caregivers can contact the program coordinator directly.

How do we start hospice at home?

Ask your parent's doctor, or call Hospice of the Foothills on (530) 272-5739 to request an evaluation; anyone, including family, can make the referral. Hospice supplements the family and any private caregiver you hire rather than replacing them.

Can my father get rides to appointments if he no longer drives?

Dial-A-Ride serves Grass Valley riders 65 and over on demand, and Nevada County Now provides door-to-door ADA paratransit with next-day booking. A caregiver with a car fills the hours buses do not.

Does IHSS pay family members in Grass Valley?

It can. Under Nevada County's rules, the IHSS caregiver can be a relative or friend once a social worker has assessed the need and Medi-Cal eligibility is in place. The county pays $18.50 an hour; apply on (530) 265-1639.
