Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Grass Valley

The city traces its start to the Gold Rush and says it got its name when settlers' cattle strayed from a camp on Greenhorn Creek to a grassy valley with better grazing. The Department of Finance counted 13,238 residents on January 1, 2026. What matters to a caregiver is how much of the area's care work sits inside city limits: Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital on Glasson Way, four of the county's five licensed skilled nursing facilities, one of its two licensed hospices (the other is in Truckee) and the IHSS Public Authority office are all here.

The population is also old, even by Nevada County standards. In ACS 2020–2024, 4,483 Grass Valley residents are 65 or older, 31.8% of the city, against 29.3% for the county and 15.7% statewide. Another 873 are 85 or older, and women make up 72% of the 65-plus group. Roughly one household in three (2,193 of 6,769) consists of someone 65-plus who lives alone. Clients like these usually want reliable short visits for bathing, meals and errands rather than one long shift. In your profile, say which neighborhoods you cover, whether you drive, and whether you have worked in a nursing facility or alongside a hospice team.

Types of caregiver jobs in Grass Valley

Grass Valley work splits three ways. Private families and IHSS recipients hire for help at home: personal care, cooking, laundry and rides to appointments. Facilities employ nursing assistants around the clock; CDPH lists Golden Empire, Crystal Ridge Care Center, Spring Hill Manor and Wolf Creek Care Center, with 392 licensed beds between them. Hospice of the Foothills runs its team of nurses, social workers and hospice aides from Rough and Ready Highway, and trains volunteers who sit with patients so families can rest, a sensible first step if you have no paid experience yet.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

For anyone looking for steady hours close to home, a Nevada County IHSS provider job pays $18.50 an hour from January 1, 2026, which the county's own IHSS page also states. In the ten-county rural area that BLS uses for Nevada County, aides doing home health and personal care work have a $16.50 midpoint wage, and nursing assistants post a $22.66 median. UC Berkeley's inventory shows no Grass Valley wage ordinance, and private employers here owe at least the state's $16.90.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Grass Valley

The city has not added any caregiving regulations beyond California's. Doing non-medical work for a Grass Valley household that pays you directly requires no state license, and you must enroll on the Home Care Aide Registry only when an agency is your employer. IHSS enrollment runs through Connecting Point, the Public Authority, at 208 Sutton Way, (530) 274-5601; the full steps are on the Nevada County page. Jobs in the four nursing facilities and at the hospital generally call for state CNA certification, and Sierra College's route to it is a one-semester course followed by the state exam. Anyone paid to care for an older or dependent adult must, by law, report suspected mistreatment. More detail is in our California requirements guide.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Grass Valley: frequently asked questions

Which Grass Valley employers hire nursing assistants?

Four skilled nursing facilities in the city appear on the CDPH list: Wolf Creek Care Center on Catherine Lane, Spring Hill Manor (Joerschke Drive), and Golden Empire and Crystal Ridge Care Center, both on Dorsey Drive. Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital on Glasson Way is the other large clinical employer. Check each one's own careers page for current openings.

Where is the nearest CNA course for Grass Valley residents?

Sierra College runs a 16-week nursing assistant course. Its program page takes fall applications for the Rocklin Campus in April and fingerprints students there, so ask the Nursing Department whether any section meets at the Nevada County Campus on Sierra College Drive before you plan around it.

Can I volunteer with hospice to get experience first?

Yes. Hospice of the Foothills trains direct patient support volunteers who stay with patients while family caregivers take a break. It asks for at least a year of service, about two to four hours a week, attendance at a monthly team meeting and completion of its training.

Is there an IHSS office in Grass Valley?

Connecting Point, the IHSS Public Authority that handles provider enrollment, payroll questions and the caregiver registry, is at 208 Sutton Way in Grass Valley. Applications for IHSS services go to Nevada County Adult Services in Nevada City on (530) 265-1639.

Can I reach Grass Valley clients by bus?

Partly. Nevada County Connects runs weekday routes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., including the Route 3 loop past Gold Country Village and Raley's, but there is no Sunday service and some stops are served only on request. A car widens the jobs you can accept, so say in your profile whether you drive.

Does CaregiverConnect take a cut of my pay?

No. Caregivers join free, apply to Grass Valley posts free, and keep everything a family pays them. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks, so families may ask you for references or a Live Scan of your own.
