Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Nevada City
The Department of Finance put Nevada City at 3,325 residents on January 1, 2026. It is small, and it is old: ACS 2020–2024 counts 1,296 people aged 65 and over, 40.9% of the city, against 29.3% across Nevada County and 15.7% in California. The median resident is 52.8 years old. More than half of all households (742 of 1,323) include someone 65 or older, and in 243 a person of that age lives alone.
Nevada City also houses the offices that run home care for the whole county. Nevada County Adult Services, which takes IHSS applications, investigates APS reports and sends Senior Outreach Nurses to older residents, works from the county Government Center at 950 Maidu Avenue. What the city lacks is large clinical employers: the state facility list shows three licensed primary care clinics with Nevada City addresses but no hospital or nursing home, and those jobs are in Grass Valley. A Nevada City profile should therefore say plainly that you cover both cities, whether you have a car, and which kinds of personal care you are comfortable providing.

Types of caregiver jobs in Nevada City
Most Nevada City work is in clients' homes. Private families hire for personal care, meals, housework and company, often for a few hours several times a week. IHSS providers are paid for hours the county authorizes, and Nevada County lets the client pick a relative or friend as provider. Clinical roles, such as nursing assistant shifts at the hospital and the four skilled nursing facilities, are a short drive or a Route 1 bus ride away in Grass Valley. If you are new to the work, hospice volunteering or a Connecting Point class is a low-cost way to get started.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
EDD's small-area estimate for Nevada City is not usable: the published monthly file shows no unemployment figure for the city. The county figure is the better guide. About 4.8% of Nevada County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. Statewide the figure was 5.3%, so the county sits lower. Nevada City's median household income is $75,792 in the census survey, while 18.3% of residents 65 and older have incomes below the poverty level. A Nevada County IHSS provider earns $18.50 an hour from January 1, 2026. Across the ten counties BLS groups with Nevada County, home health and personal care aides have a $16.50 median and nursing assistants $22.66. UC Berkeley's inventory lists no Nevada City ordinance, so the state $16.90 applies.
How to enroll as a provider in Nevada County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Nevada County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
