How to find an in-home caregiver in Nevada City

Nevada City has 3,325 residents by the state's 2026 estimate, and in ACS 2020–2024 40.9% of them are 65 or older, compared with 29.3% across Nevada County. In 56.1% of the city's 1,323 households at least one person is 65-plus. A disability is reported by only 15.4% of Nevada City residents in that age group. A request may therefore begin with a few hours a week of help with errands, meals, housework or driving, with personal care added later if needs change.

The pool of caregivers for a Nevada City post is shared with Grass Valley, where the hospital, nursing facilities and hospice employ most of the area's trained aides. Route 1 links the two cities every half hour on weekdays, but buses do not run on Sundays, so ask applicants how they would reach you on a weekend. Profiles from caregivers near your address are listed below, and new ones appear as caregivers join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Nevada City

Ask for proof of anything an applicant lists. A CNA's certificate can be looked up through CDPH by number. A Nevada County IHSS provider has cleared a DOJ Live Scan and enrolled through Connecting Point, which can also refer registry caregivers to IHSS recipients. Every agency-employed aide is on the Home Care Aide Registry; independents appear only if they enrolled. Have each applicant meet your parent at home, speak to two people they recently worked for, and book a short paid trial before committing to a schedule. Ask how the caregiver would respond to a wildfire evacuation order with your parent. None of these checks are done by CaregiverConnect.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Could you take my mother to the Western Sierra clinic on Searls Avenue and help her explain her symptoms?
  • Do you live in Nevada City or Grass Valley, and who covers my mother's shift if your car is in the shop?
  • Suppose an evacuation warning is issued while you are here. What is your first step with my father?
  • Would you be here on Tuesdays and Thursdays to receive the Meals on Wheels delivery and make sure he eats?
  • Have you worked with a Senior Outreach Nurse or a home health nurse on a medication plan?
  • My aunt mainly needs company and help with shopping. Are you happy with a mostly non-medical role?
  • Could you help her apply for the city's senior trash discount or the defensible space program if it reopens?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Nevada City has passed no local minimum wage (UC Berkeley's inventory lists none), which leaves the state rate of $16.90 as the floor for a caregiver you hire yourself. Reference points: IHSS pays Nevada County providers $18.50, BLS puts the median for aides in the ten-county rural area at $16.50, and CareScout's 2025 survey found a $40 hourly statewide median for agency home care. Nevada City households employing a personal attendant owe overtime beyond nine hours on any day, or 45 in the week. The city's median household income is $75,792, yet nearly one in five older residents (18.3%) lives in poverty; for them, IHSS, open to people with a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, could pay for part or all of the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
