How to find an in-home caregiver in Nevada County
The county is two hiring areas rather than one. On the west side, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley and nearby communities share a hospital, four nursing facilities and the county bus system. On the east side, Truckee has its own hospital, long-term care center and home health agency, and its own buses. Put the place name in the post, Alta Sierra or Lake Wildwood rather than just the county, plus whether errands or appointments mean driving.
The need is large. ACS 2020–2024 counts 30,033 residents aged 65 and over, 29.3% of the county, and 7,394 single-person households headed by someone past 65. More than nine in ten residents speak only English at home. If your parent qualifies for IHSS, Connecting Point keeps a registry of providers looking for clients, which can widen a small pool. Below, the nearest profiles to the home come first.

Types of in-home care families in Nevada County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Nevada County
Ask which credential a candidate holds and check it. Someone enrolled through Connecting Point as a Nevada County IHSS provider has cleared state fingerprinting and holds a provider number. A CNA's certification comes from CDPH and can be looked up. The Home Care Aide Registry covers staff of licensed home care organizations; CDSS lists three licensed in the county (May 2025), so most people who answer a private post will be independent. Phone at least two people the candidate has worked for, let your parent spend time with the two you like best, and try one paid shift first. We at CaregiverConnect run no checks on identity, criminal history or references, and a background report, if your family wants one, needs the candidate's signed consent and is ordered by you.

What in-home care costs in Nevada County: hourly rates and schedules
West county towns. In Grass Valley or Nevada City, two shorter visits a day often work: morning care, then an evening meal. Outlying homes. Fewer, longer shifts make more sense when each trip is a long one. After a hospital or nursing-facility stay. Budget for long days and possibly nights at first, cutting back as strength returns.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains nonmetro area (includes Nevada County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Nevada County | $18.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Before you set a private rate, look at three local figures. The state minimum is $16.90 an hour; Grass Valley, Nevada City, Truckee and the county itself are all missing from UC Berkeley's ordinance list. In BLS's May 2025 survey, the median aide wage for the ten-county region around Nevada County was $16.50. Nevada County IHSS pays its providers $18.50. A personal attendant you hire yourself is owed overtime, one and a half times the hourly rate, once a day's work goes beyond nine hours or a week's beyond 45. The county requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination for IHSS, so if your parent has Medi-Cal, phone (530) 265-1639 before you settle on a budget, since county-authorized hours could cover some of the care and your chosen caregiver could be the paid provider.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
