How to find an in-home caregiver in Marin County

Finding help in Marin is mostly a question of distance. The county's people live along Highway 101, and so do most of the caregivers who can commute without a car: Marin Transit runs from the San Rafael Transit Center north to Novato and south to Mill Valley and Sausalito. If your parent lives in the hills above Tiburon or in a West Marin village such as Inverness or Bolinas, expect fewer applicants and plan to offer mileage, parking or longer shifts. Someone coming over the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge from the East Bay pays a toll each day, which is worth acknowledging in your post.

Name the language your relative relaxes into. Marin's ACS 2020–2024 profile shows 23.9% of residents five and older speaking a language besides English at home and 13.9% speaking Spanish; of the Spanish speakers, 46.0% report speaking English less than very well. Profiles on this page are listed nearest first from the ZIP code you enter and change as caregivers join, so check back a few days after posting.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Marin County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Marin County

Start with the paperwork a candidate can actually show you. Anyone enrolled as a Marin IHSS provider went through PA Marin's in-person enrollment, proved identity with original documents and passed DOJ fingerprinting, and registry members sat an extra interview with PA Marin staff. An aide working for a licensed agency has to be registered with the state as a home care aide; independents can choose. Nursing assistants carry CDPH certification, and College of Marin runs the course in Novato. Then do the personal checks: speak by phone with two earlier employers, let your relative join the interview in their own home, and book a single paid trial day before agreeing to regular hours. CaregiverConnect does not look into anyone's history; a background report needs the candidate's signed consent, and ordering it is up to you.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town would you set out from, and how bad is the 101 at the hour you would arrive?
  • Have you helped clients after a stay at MarinHealth in Greenbrae, Kaiser San Rafael or Novato Community Hospital?
  • Are you an enrolled Marin IHSS provider, and are you on the PA Marin registry?
  • Would you be comfortable taking my mother to classes or lunch at Vivalon's campus on Third Street?
  • Can you help my father book Marin Access paratransit rides, or would you drive him yourself?
  • If the power goes out during a fire-weather shutoff, what would you do first?
  • When you need time off, how far ahead will you tell us?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Marin County: hourly rates and schedules

Along 101. Morning routines and afternoon check-ins for a parent living alone, plus escorts to Kaiser or MarinHealth. Southern Marin. Weekday blocks while adult children commute to San Francisco. West Marin. Two or three long days a week, or someone living in, so the trip over the hill happens less often.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Three reference points bracket a Marin rate: $20.40 from IHSS, a $17.28 regional median for aides from BLS, and $40 an hour, CareScout's figure for agency non-medical care across California. Families hiring directly generally settle somewhere above the IHSS number and well below the agency one. The state's $16.90 is the legal minimum in nearly all of Marin; Novato's higher tiers reach only businesses that employ 26 people or more, which leaves a single-caregiver household outside them. Long days and live-in work trigger overtime for personal attendants when one day exceeds nine hours of work or a week exceeds 45. Medi-Cal members aged 65-plus, or blind or disabled, should phone IHSS intake (415-473-4636) before you settle on private hours, keeping in mind that IHSS never funds round-the-clock care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Marin County: frequently asked questions

Who qualifies for IHSS in Marin?

People living in Marin with full-scope Medi-Cal and aged 65 or more, blind, or disabled (children can qualify), living at home rather than in a facility, with a disability expected to last over a year. Call 415-473-4636 to apply; if your relative has no Medi-Cal yet, start with 877-410-8817 or BenefitsCal.

What happens if our IHSS caregiver calls in sick?

PA Marin runs an Emergency Back-Up Provider program for urgent gaps, such as a sudden call-out that would leave your relative without essential care. It is limited and not meant for routine scheduling holes, so keep a private backup as well.

Are there no-cost rides to medical appointments in Marin?

Several. Vivalon's CarePool pairs volunteer drivers with residents 65 and over who can manage a car door alone, and Vivalon's escorted medical rides for people 60-plus cost nothing while the funding holds. Through STAR and TRIP, Marin Access pays mileage to a friend or neighbor who drives.

Does IHSS pay caregivers to drive my father around?

No. PA Marin notes that providers are not required to drive and IHSS does not cover travel costs to appointments, so agree on any driving and gas reimbursement during the interview.

Does CaregiverConnect vet the caregivers it lists?

It does not. Profiles go up without any screening by us, so reading them closely, phoning references and ordering a check are your jobs. A post is free; to message applicants and confirm whom you hired, Family Premium costs $24.99 per month.

My parent lives in Point Reyes Station. Is it worth posting?

Yes, but enter that ZIP code and describe the trip honestly. Offering a longer weekly shift, mileage or a place to stay overnight gives caregivers from the 101 corridor a reason to make the drive.
