Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Marin County
Marin is a county of older households. Nearly one resident in four (23.8%) has reached 65, per ACS 2020–2024, the median age is 47.4, and 17,820 households consist of someone 65-plus living alone. Most homes are owner-occupied (64.7%), so expect work in single-family houses spread across the hills, often posted by a client's grown children.
Almost all of the county's population sits along the Highway 101 corridor, which is also where the buses run. Marin Transit routes 49 and 57 link downtown San Rafael with Novato, route 71 continues south to Marin City, and the Canal routes (23, 30, 35, 36) start in San Rafael's Canal neighborhood. West Marin is different: the Stagecoach 61 and 68 serve Bolinas, Stinson Beach and Point Reyes, and a job out there almost always needs a car. In your profile, say which side of the county you can reach and whether you drive. Home languages vary: 23.9% of Marin residents from age five up report one other than English, 13.9% report Spanish, and Marin's aging office keeps Spanish- and Vietnamese-speaking social workers on staff.

Types of caregiver jobs in Marin County

If you are new to paid caregiving, start with companionship, meal preparation, errands and light housework; PA Marin's registry does not require experience, and its in-person classes cover body mechanics, infection prevention and dementia basics once you are an IHSS provider.

Caregiver pay in Marin County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 119,120 jobs; concentration 1.81× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Marin County | $20.40 | CDSS; effective February 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
There is no Marin-only BLS estimate. The county sits inside a San Francisco and East Bay metro whose 119,120 aide jobs, home health and personal care combined, had a median wage of $17.28. The figure closer to home is IHSS: Marin County pays registry and family providers $20.40 an hour since February 1, 2026. Novato is the only Marin city in UC Berkeley's July 2026 inventory of local minimum wages, with tiers by employer size: $17.73 for 100 or more employees, $17.46 for 26 to 99, and the state's $16.90 for businesses with 25 or fewer. San Rafael, the other cities and unincorporated Marin follow the $16.90 state minimum. A household hiring one caregiver directly is a small employer by any of those measures, so the IHSS rate is the more useful anchor when you set a private rate.
How to enroll as a provider in Marin County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Marin County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Marin County
A caregiver hired privately by a Marin family for non-medical tasks holds no required license. A state-licensed agency must register each aide it employs with the Home Care Aide Registry ($35), and independents may sign up if they wish. IHSS pay requires enrollment with the IHSS Public Authority of Marin, 70 Skyview Terrace, Building B, San Rafael, (415) 499-1024: fill in the online form and watch the required videos, attend a 60- to 90-minute appointment at the Public Authority, where staff check your real Social Security card against a valid government ID in the same name, then take the Live Scan form to an approved vendor. After the DOJ clears you, county payroll takes about ten days to issue a provider number. Nursing assistant jobs in hospitals and nursing homes need CDPH certification. Caregivers are mandated reporters; Marin Adult Protective Services takes reports at 415-473-2774 around the clock. Details: Marin IHSS guide and California requirements.
