Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Novato

Novato's population was 51,638 on the Department of Finance's January 2026 estimate, and the town skews older than its size suggests. In ACS 2020–2024 the median age is 47.5, 24.0% of residents are 65 or over, and 4,210 people are between 75 and 84. In 3,208 households, a person 65 or older lives alone. Two-thirds of homes are owner-occupied, and 644 are mobile homes, so a typical client lives in a house or a manufactured-home park rather than an apartment building.

Most families here will expect a caregiver who drives, but buses do reach the main corridors: Marin Transit route 49 runs from downtown San Rafael through Hamilton to San Marin, route 57 comes up through Marinwood and Ignacio, and route 71 continues south to Marin City. Put the Novato neighborhoods you cover in your profile and say whether you have a car. Languages count as well; 31.5% of residents five and older speak another language at home, mostly Spanish (20.3%), and nearly a quarter of the foreign-born came from Asia. Requests from 94945, 94947 and 94949 appear above as families post them.

Types of caregiver jobs in Novato

Novato households commonly look for help with morning routines, meals and medication reminders, drives to Novato Community Hospital or to Kaiser in San Rafael, overnight cover after a fall or surgery, and steady companionship for someone with memory loss. If you are starting out, offer companionship, errands, cooking and light housekeeping; the College of Marin nursing assistant program on Ignacio Boulevard is in town if you later want a CDPH certificate.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Novato: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Novato's ordinance has three tiers from January 1, 2026: $17.73 an hour at businesses with 100 or more employees, $17.46 at those with 26 to 99, and the state's $16.90 at those with 25 or fewer. It covers anyone who works more than two hours in a week inside city limits. In practice, that means a larger home care agency or assisted-living employer in Novato owes you the higher rate, while a family hiring you directly counts as a small employer and owes at least $16.90. Marin IHSS pays $20.40, above every Novato tier, and the BLS metro median for aides is $17.28. Use the IHSS figure, not the legal minimum, when you name a private rate.

How to enroll as a provider in Marin County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Marin County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
