Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Rafael

The Department of Finance counted 59,890 people in San Rafael on January 1, 2026, which makes it Marin's largest city. Care work here is split between quite different parts of town. Downtown and the Canal neighborhood are dense and close to buses, while Terra Linda, Santa Venetia, Peacock Gap and the hillside streets are mostly houses where a car helps. Nearly half of homes in the city are rented (47.0% in ACS 2020–2024), more than in the county as a whole, and 8.7% of households own no car, which means some clients will need you to accompany them on the bus or arrange rides rather than drive them.

Language is the strongest thing a San Rafael profile can show. In the ACS, 38.1% of residents five and up use some language other than English with their households, and for 28.3% it is Spanish; more than half of those Spanish speakers (57.5%) describe their English as less than very well. The city's Albert J. Boro Community Center on Canal Street says its older-adult program draws mostly Hispanic/Latino and Vietnamese members. If you speak Spanish or Vietnamese, put it in your headline, and list the neighborhoods you can reach. Postings from ZIP codes 94901 and 94903 show at the top as families publish them.

Requests here typically include morning help getting washed and dressed, cooking and pill reminders for someone on their own, rides to Kaiser on Montecillo Road or to MarinHealth in Greenbrae, overnight cover after surgery, and longer days with a client who has dementia. People without paid experience usually begin with companionship, shopping, cooking and housekeeping, or join PA Marin's registry, which asks for English, independence and transport where needed, not prior caregiving jobs.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Rafael: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

San Rafael has no local minimum wage: it is absent from UC Berkeley Labor Center's July 1, 2026 inventory, so the state's $16.90 is the floor. Novato, to the north, is the only Marin city with its own rate, and only for employers of 26 or more. The regional aide median of $17.28 comes from a five-county BLS metro dominated by San Francisco and the East Bay. Marin IHSS, at $20.40 an hour since February 1, 2026, is the better guide for private rates in San Rafael. If an IHSS client also wants you to drive, PA Marin may ask for proof of liability insurance, your DMV record and a valid license, and IHSS does not repay mileage, so settle gas money with the family directly.

How to enroll as a provider in Marin County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Marin County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Rafael

Private non-medical work for a San Rafael household needs no state license. An agency licensed by the state has to enroll its aides in the $35 Home Care Aide Registry; for independents, joining is a choice. IHSS enrollment happens in town: register online and watch the required videos, then come to PA Marin, 70 Skyview Terrace, Building B (94903), for an in-person appointment of 60 to 90 minutes with an original Social Security card and current photo ID in the same name. You leave with a Live Scan request and a list of approved fingerprint vendors. Certain convictions, including abuse of a child or elder and Medicare fraud, bar enrollment. When a recipient hires you, the IHSS social worker's office, 415-473-7118, supplies the provider packet. Hospital and nursing home roles need a CDPH nursing assistant certificate. You are a mandated reporter: Marin APS answers 415-473-2774 at all hours. See the Marin IHSS guide and California requirements.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in San Rafael: frequently asked questions

Does San Rafael have its own minimum wage?

Not at present. San Rafael is missing from UC Berkeley's 2026 inventory, so California's $16.90 applies. Marin IHSS pays $20.40, which many caregivers use as their starting point with private families.

Where is IHSS provider enrollment in San Rafael?

At the Public Authority, 70 Skyview Terrace, Building B, after completing the online steps. Photocopies and expired cards are turned away, so carry your actual Social Security card and an unexpired photo ID. Questions go to (415) 499-1024.

How do I get on the PA Marin registry?

Enroll as an IHSS provider first, then send the short registry form. Staff call you for an interview, and afterwards recipients can contact you. You decide which jobs to accept.

Is speaking Vietnamese useful for caregiving in San Rafael?

It can be. The city reports that Hispanic/Latino and Vietnamese older adults make up the largest groups at the Boro Center's weekly program, and the county aging line keeps Vietnamese-speaking social workers. Name every language you speak in your profile.

Can I reach clients without a car?

In much of the city, yes. Marin Transit runs Canal, Santa Venetia and Smith Ranch Road routes from the downtown transit center, and route 57 reaches Northgate and Kaiser. Hillside neighborhoods are harder, so say in your profile which areas you can get to.

Where do San Rafael families post?

On the San Rafael family page; their requests, and those from nearby Marin towns, appear in the list above.
