Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sonoma County
The Sonoma County IHSS Public Authority sorts its registry by five zones, and that is a sensible way to plan your own search. Its application lists Central County as the Santa Rosa ZIP areas; North County as Windsor, Healdsburg, Geyserville, Asti, Fulton and Cloverdale; South County as Rohnert Park, Cotati, Penngrove, Petaluma and Valley Ford; East County as the Sonoma Valley, from Sonoma and El Verano up through Boyes Hot Springs, Agua Caliente, Glen Ellen and Kenwood; and West County as Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville, Occidental, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Jenner, Bodega and the other river and coast communities. Providers tick the zones they will cover. Do the same in your profile: name your home town, the zones you can reach on a normal weekday, and whether a client on a ridge road outside Occidental or Cazadero is realistic for you.
Most of the county is driven, not ridden: in ACS 2020–2024, 69.4% of working residents drove to work alone and 1.1% took public transportation. Without a car, keep to towns on a Sonoma County Transit trunk route (listed below). Language opens doors as well. Of residents five and older, 21.0% use Spanish at home and 27.0% use some non-English language, so bilingual applicants should lead with it.

Add rides from outlying towns to Santa Rosa appointments and overnight cover after a discharge. Newcomers usually start with errands, housekeeping and companionship.
- Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.

Caregiver pay in Sonoma County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Santa Rosa–Petaluma, CA metro; private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, Santa Rosa–Petaluma, CA metro | $17.72 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 10,150 jobs; concentration 1.79× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Sonoma County | $20.25 | CDSS; effective March 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
In May 2025 the Santa Rosa–Petaluma metro employed 10,150 people as home health and personal care aides, at a $17.72 median; a location quotient of 1.79 means these jobs are a larger share of local work than nationally. County IHSS pays $20.25 from March 1, 2026, about two and a half dollars above that median. Three cities in the county set their own floors, all from January 1, 2026: Santa Rosa at $18.21 for every business regardless of size, Petaluma at $18.31, and the City of Sonoma at $18.47 for employers with 26 or more workers and $17.38 for smaller ones. Rohnert Park, Windsor, Healdsburg, Cloverdale, Sebastopol, Cotati and the unincorporated county are not in UC Berkeley's local wage inventory, so the $16.90 state minimum applies there. None of the three city pages mentions household employers, so ask the city if a family pays you directly.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Sonoma County
No state license is required when a household employs you directly for non-medical help, and the $35 state Home Care Aide Registry listing only becomes compulsory if you go to work for a licensed agency. The county runs IHSS from its Adult and Aging offices on Westwind Blvd in Santa Rosa (number 3725), with a second office at 5350 Old Redwood Hwy N, Suite 100, in Petaluma; the main line is (707) 565-5900. The Public Authority, (707) 565-5700, runs the registry. Its application says the registry is optional for someone a client has already chosen; otherwise selected applicants attend an information meeting, have references checked, and complete state enrollment, which includes a DOJ background check, a new provider orientation and a check of your photo ID and Social Security card. Nursing homes and hospitals hire only CDPH-certified nursing assistants. Mandated reporting applies to every caregiver, and Sonoma County APS answers (707) 565-5940 day and night.
