Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sierra County
Sierra County is small. The Department of Finance counted 3,153 residents on January 1, 2026, of whom 756 live in Loyalton, the only incorporated city, and 2,397 in unincorporated communities. The county splits its services between two ends: Social Services keeps offices at 202 Front Street in Loyalton and 22 Maiden Lane in Downieville, and the county contracts with one nonprofit for rides in eastern Sierra County and another in the west. Before you take a job, check which side of the county the client lives on and how far that is from you.
The population is old. ACS 2020–2024 puts 963 residents at 65 or older, 35.1% of the total, with a median age of 54.7. More than half of the county's 1,219 households (52.4%) include someone 65 or over, and an estimated 303 are an older person living alone. The survey also counted 42.5% of housing units as vacant. On your profile, name the communities you will travel to and whether you can do longer shifts.

Types of caregiver jobs in Sierra County
IHSS is the main source of paid home care. The county describes its providers as independent: the recipient is the employer and hires and supervises the provider, and authorized tasks can include housecleaning, meals, laundry, shopping, personal care, rides to medical appointments and protective supervision. Facility work is concentrated in Loyalton, where Eastern Plumas Health Care runs a 39-bed skilled nursing facility and in October 2026 listed both a per diem and a full-time CNA opening there. Private families also ask for companionship and help around the house.

Caregiver pay in Sierra County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Sierra and nine other counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Sierra and nine other counties) | $16.50 median ($17.00 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 5,000 jobs; concentration 1.73× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Sierra County | $18.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Sierra and nine other counties) | $22.66 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Sierra County has no wage figures of its own in the BLS survey. BLS groups it with Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity in a ten-county nonmetropolitan area, where in May 2025 the 5,000 home health and personal care aides had a $16.50 median and a $17.00 mean, and nursing assistants a $22.66 median. CDSS sets the Sierra County IHSS provider wage at $18.50 an hour from January 1, 2026, $1.60 more than the $16.90 state minimum. The UC Berkeley ordinance inventory lists no local minimum wage in the county, so private work starts at $16.90, with overtime for personal attendants after nine hours a day or 45 a week.
About 5.1% of Sierra County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, below California's 5.3%; monthly figures ranged from 4.0% to 6.4%. The labor force is about 1,436 people, and hours authorized through IHSS in Sierra County give a provider regular, county-paid work that does not depend on how many private families are hiring at once.
How to enroll as a provider in Sierra County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Sierra County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
