How to find an in-home caregiver in Barstow
The Department of Finance estimated 24,727 Barstow residents for January 2026; of the people the 2020–2024 survey counted, 3,078 were 65 or older. More than a quarter of households include an older person, and in 965 of them an older person lives by themselves. If your parent is one of them, write the post around what a normal day needs: who checks in each morning, who cooks, who handles bathing and medicines, and who drives to appointments.
Caregivers who answer are likely to live in Barstow itself. The bus to the Victor Valley, VVTA route 15, makes four southbound trips on weekdays and takes about an hour to reach the Victorville transportation center. In the CDSS licensing file there is no licensed home care organization and no licensed elder care home with a Barstow address, so independent caregivers and IHSS providers fill most of this need. Spanish is the home language of 20.2% of Barstow residents over age four, so a bilingual caregiver is a fair thing to request if your parent would like one. Nearest caregivers to the ZIP you enter appear first in the cards above.

Evaluating caregivers in Barstow
Ask what each candidate holds, then check it. Nursing assistant certificates are issued by CDPH and can be looked up. An IHSS provider enrolled in San Bernardino County has been fingerprinted and has completed orientation, and Barstow's DAAS district office can tell you how the IHSS process works. If an applicant lists the Veterans Home, the post-acute center on Rimrock Road or the hospital as a past employer, ask for a supervisor's name and phone number. Interview with your parent present, check two references, and make sure a relative is in the house during the first paid shift. CaregiverConnect runs no background or reference checks, so organize any report yourself once the caregiver has signed a consent form.

- Which Barstow neighborhood do you drive from, and who covers for you when you are sick?
- My father served in the military. Would you help him keep track of VA appointments and paperwork?
- My father lives alone. What would you check each morning before you leave?
- Can you ride VVTA route 2 with him to Barstow Community Hospital or the county health office if he cannot drive?
- Tell me about a time a nurse from home health or hospice came by during your shift. How did you share the work?
- Are you a CNA, an enrolled IHSS provider, or both?
- Could you cover an overnight if he comes home from the hospital and needs watching?
What in-home care costs in Barstow: hourly rates and schedules
Daily check-ins. When a parent lives alone, one way to begin is a brief visit every morning plus a longer stay two or three days a week. Discharge support. After a stay at Barstow Community Hospital or a skilled nursing facility, plan for longer shifts at first, alongside any home health visits. Dialysis days. If your parent is treated at Desert Cities Dialysis on South 7th Avenue, book the caregiver around those appointments.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
No Barstow ordinance appears in UC Berkeley's inventory of local minimum wages, so California's $16.90 is the lowest legal rate for anyone you employ to care for a parent. Overtime, at 150% of the hourly rate, covers any personal-attendant time beyond nine hours in a Barstow workday or 45 in a workweek. For comparison, San Bernardino County IHSS pays $19.00 and aides across the metro have a $16.50 BLS median. Barstow's median household income is $53,380 in the ACS, and the poverty rate for its residents 65 and older is 19.5%. A parent with Medi-Cal should apply for IHSS before you pay privately: the county intake line is (877) 800-4544, and San Bernardino County lists family members, friends and neighbors among the providers a client may choose.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Barstow: frequently asked questions
Are there home care agencies in Barstow?
Not licensed non-medical ones: the May 2025 CDSS file has no home care organization with a Barstow address. CDPH does list two home health agencies and a hospice in town, which provide medical home visits rather than daily help.
Is there assisted living in Barstow?
There is none licensed today; CDSS shows two former Barstow elder care homes, both closed. CalVet says the Veterans Home plans to add an assisted living level, and for skilled nursing there are the Veterans Home and Mountain View Post Acute.
Could IHSS pay me, her daughter, to look after my mother in Barstow?
It can. CDSS requires her to have a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, the county must authorize hours after a home visit, and the county names family members among the providers a client can pick, paid at $19.00 an hour. Start on (877) 800-4544 or at the DAAS office on East Virginia Way.
How can my father get to appointments in Barstow?
VVTA route 2 stops near Barstow Community Hospital and the county health office for $0.75 a ride for seniors. If he cannot manage the bus, apply for Direct Access, or ask VVTA about TRIP mileage reimbursement for a volunteer driver.
Is the Veterans Home an option for my parent?
It offers skilled nursing and domiciliary care on Veterans Parkway, and CMS gives it five stars. Eligibility rules come from CalVet, so contact the home directly before planning around it.
Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers in Barstow?
No. You check references and arrange any background report. Your post costs nothing. Messaging applicants and confirming your choice require Family Premium, at $24.99 monthly.
