How to find an in-home caregiver in Ontario

Hiring privately in Ontario usually means filling the gaps around family members' work and the hours IHSS can pay for. Post the specific blocks you need with your ZIP code (91761, 91762 or 91764), what has to happen in each one, and whether the caregiver will drive; the profiles above appear as caregivers near you join. Spanish is the home language for 46.5% of Ontario residents over four in the ACS 2020–2024, and 22.6% are less than fully fluent in English; when your parent prefers Spanish, say so at the very start of your post.

Use the city's free services alongside a paid caregiver. The Ontario Senior Center on East B Street serves a free weekday lunch to people 60 and over, and its Phone Assurance Lines for Seniors make check-in calls Monday to Wednesday; a caregiver can plan a shift around the lunch or a class, and the phone calls cover days when nobody is booked.

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Ontario

Ask each Ontario applicant which of these they hold, and check it: enrollment as a San Bernardino County IHSS provider (Department of Justice fingerprints), a place on the county Public Authority registry (which also required reference letters and home-care experience), an entry on California's Home Care Aide list, or a CDPH nursing assistant certificate. A CPR and first aid card is a fair thing to ask for: Chaffey Adult School teaches the course and the IHSS registry requires it. Speak to two references by phone, interview in your parent's own living room, have a licensed screening firm run a background report once the applicant signs a release, and start with one paid try-out shift. CaregiverConnect performs no vetting of its own; the Verified badge tells you an uploaded document was looked at, nothing more.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and which roads do you take to reach us in south or central Ontario?
  • Is Spanish, or another language, one you use comfortably with older adults?
  • Do you hold a current CPR and first aid card, and when does it expire?
  • Have you supported someone after a stay at Kaiser Ontario or San Antonio Regional Hospital?
  • Would you go with my mother to the Ontario Senior Center for lunch or a class, and stay with her there?
  • Are you an IHSS provider for anyone else, and how do your other hours fit around ours?
  • How much do you ask per hour, and is driving or a last-minute shift priced differently?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Ontario: hourly rates and schedules

Ontario families mostly ask for weekday daytime help, often split into a morning block for personal care and a midday block that includes lunch and an outing. Evening hours to help with dinner and bedtime, Saturday cover and a few weeks of daily visits after a hospital discharge are the other common requests.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Expect an Ontario caregiver to start from the $19.00 county IHSS wage and go up for personal care, dementia supervision, driving and odd hours; the $16.50 metro median for aides and the $16.90 state minimum wage (Ontario has no local ordinance) are below what experienced caregivers accept. The $40.00 statewide agency median is the comparison for hiring through a company. Direct hiring turns you into an employer: household payroll tax kicks in past the federal annual threshold, and personal attendants in California earn overtime beyond 9 hours in one day or 45 across a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Ontario

Write the deal down: tasks, schedule, pay, overtime, gas money, how much notice either side gives, and who to phone if something goes wrong. Keep a weekly timesheet, log county-paid and family-paid hours on different sheets if one person works both, and lock away cards and medication. Concerns that an Ontario senior is being harmed or neglected go to San Bernardino County Adult Protective Services, (877) 565-2020, at any hour. How it works

How to hire a private caregiver in Ontario (no agency)

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Ontario: frequently asked questions

How do I hire a caregiver in Ontario, California?

Can my father get free rides in Ontario?

If he lives in Ontario and is 62 or older, or 50 or older with a disability, he can apply for Silver S.T.A.R.S., a free curb-to-curb shuttle within city limits on weekdays. Call (909) 395-2886. Rides depend on driver availability.

The Ontario Senior Center’s Phone Assurance Lines for Seniors phone older residents for a check-in and a chat Monday to Wednesday, and the center’s free weekday lunch gives a reason to get out of the house. Both are free.

Does CaregiverConnect run background checks?

No. Some caregivers share their own screening results to earn a reviewed Verified badge, yet you remain the one who confirms who they are and what they have done.
