Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Barstow

The state's January 2026 estimate put Barstow at 24,727 residents, 1.0% fewer than a year before. It is an older city than Adelanto: in ACS 2020–2024, 3,078 residents (12.3%) are 65 or older and 280 are 85 or older, and the census counts only a few hundred people in group quarters, so those figures are not distorted by institutions. Of the city's 9,145 households, 2,437 (26.6%) include someone 65 or older, and 965 are an older person living alone. That last number is the one to notice. A parent on their own needs a daily visit, cooked meals, help in the shower and rides to the doctor, and those are typical private requests.

Barstow is also a city of renters and veterans. More than half of occupied homes (56.3%) are rented, and 1,618 adults (9.4% of the civilian adult population) are veterans. Commutes are shorter than in Adelanto, at an average of 28.2 minutes against 47.0. In your profile, give your neighborhood, whether you drive, any experience with veterans or with dementia, and whether you can take overnight shifts.

Types of caregiver jobs in Barstow

Several licensed health facilities hire in Barstow. CDPH lists the Veterans Home of California–Barstow (60 skilled nursing and 120 intermediate care beds), Mountain View Post Acute on Rimrock Road (59 skilled nursing beds), Barstow Community Hospital (30 acute beds), two home health agencies, a hospice and a dialysis clinic. Nursing-assistant roles there require a CDPH certificate. Private and IHSS work does not, and companion, meal and errand shifts are a reasonable way in if you have no paid experience. The CDSS licensing file has no Barstow listing for a licensed RCFE (residential care for the elderly) or a licensed home care organization, so most home care here is arranged directly between families and caregivers.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Barstow: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Nursing assistants, Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties)$22.32 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario MSA (Riverside and San Bernardino counties) projection: 94,950 aide jobs in 2023 to 126,020 in 2033 (+32.7%), about 191,990 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

About 7.2% of Barstow's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. That is above the 5.3% average for San Bernardino County, which matched California's 5.3%; Barstow's monthly rate ranged from 6.4% to 7.9% in a labor force of roughly 9,380. In that market a long-term client is steady income, and each authorized hour with a San Bernardino County IHSS client is paid at $19.00.

Money is tight for many households. ACS 2020–2024 puts Barstow's median household income at $53,380, with 23.1% of residents below the poverty line and 28.4% of households on CalFresh. The median gross rent is $1,091, well below Adelanto's $1,437, yet 42.0% of renters spend 35% or more of income on it. The Labor Center's inventory lists no Barstow wage ordinance, so private hours start at $16.90, and a Barstow personal attendant is due overtime for any time past nine hours in a shift or 45 across the week. If you hold a CNA certificate, the metro median for nursing assistants is $22.32. DIR also notes that since October 16, 2024 some health care facility workers are owed a separate, higher minimum wage, so ask a hospital or clinic employer whether your job is covered.

How to enroll as a provider in San Bernardino County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Bernardino County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Barstow

Families hiring you privately for non-medical care need you to hold no license. Agency jobs require a Home Care Aide Registry listing, and nursing positions at the town's skilled nursing homes and hospital require CDPH nursing assistant certification. For IHSS, the county's DAAS and IHSS Public Authority share a district office in town at 536 East Virginia Way, (760) 256-5544, and new providers start with the intake line, (877) 800-4544.
