Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Bernardino

Most of the county's caregiving machinery sits inside the city limits. The Department of Aging and Adult Services and the IHSS Public Authority both work out of 784 E. Hospitality Lane, the East Valley America's Job Center is at Inland Center, and two general hospitals, St. Bernardine Medical Center on North Waterman Avenue and Community Hospital of San Bernardino on Medical Center Drive, discharge patients who often go home needing help. Families in the north end near Cal State San Bernardino, in the neighborhoods around downtown and along the I-10 toward Loma Linda and Redlands all post to the same marketplace, so the postings above are filtered by your distance rather than by neighborhood name.

Two transit lines make a car-free caregiving week possible here, which is not true of much of the county. The sbX Green Line runs 15.7 miles along the E Street corridor from Cal State San Bernardino to Loma Linda University Medical Center, every 10 minutes at weekday peaks and every 20 on Saturdays, with no Sunday service; the Arrow train runs east from downtown to Redlands. If you rely on either, say so on your profile and give the stop you live near. Spanish is the home language for half of residents aged five and up (49.9%); put it near the top if you speak it.

Types of caregiver jobs in San Bernardino

Families in the city usually want help with bathing, dressing and meals for an aging parent on weekdays, help in the first weeks after a hospital stay, supervision for someone with memory loss, and short respite blocks for a spouse. Some households pair county-funded IHSS time with privately paid shifts. Errands, meals and companionship are realistic first jobs for caregivers without a certificate.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Bernardino: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties)$16.50 median ($17.03 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 102,760 jobs; concentration 2.16× national
IHSS provider wage, San Bernardino County$19.00CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties)$22.32 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario MSA (Riverside and San Bernardino counties) projection: 94,950 aide jobs in 2023 to 126,020 in 2033 (+32.7%), about 191,990 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

San Bernardino is not among the cities with a local wage ordinance in the Labor Center's tracking, so a household paying you privately owes at least California's $16.90. IHSS pays $19.00 here, more than either the state floor or the metro's $16.50 aide median from May 2025. Median household income in the city is $67,415 (ACS 2020–2024), which trails the county's $85,478 by a wide margin, which makes private-pay budgets tighter than in Redlands or Rancho Cucamonga; an IHSS case plus one or two private families is the usual way to build a full week. Nursing assistants in the metro earn a $22.32 median, a reason to consider a CNA course if you want facility or hospital work.

How to enroll as a provider in San Bernardino County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Bernardino County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Bernardino

IHSS work starts with the county's provider orientation, two signed state forms (SOC 426 and SOC 846) and DOJ fingerprinting; the Public Authority on Hospitality Lane, (866) 985-6322, handles enrollment questions and offers the BOUNDS online portal for paperwork. Joining its registry to be matched with new clients is open to county residents who can show prior home-care work and give two references. Non-medical work for a family that pays you itself requires no license. Agency aides must appear on the state's Home Care Aide list; independents can join it for a $35 fee to make their record checkable. Facility and hospital roles want a CDPH-issued CNA certificate. The county's adult abuse line is (877) 565-2020. More: California caregiver requirements.

The area

San Bernardino in numbers

The city had 222,292 people as of January 1, 2026, by the Department of Finance count, slightly more than neighboring Fontana's 219,774. Its population skews young even by county standards: ACS 2020–2024 counts 10.8% of residents aged 65 or older, about 24,000 people, and a median age of 32.2. 70.2% of residents are Hispanic or Latino, and 19.1% of those five and older speak English less than "very well". For a caregiver, those figures point to a market where bilingual help and IHSS cases matter more than luxury private-pay work.

The city's two senior centers show where older residents gather: the Fifth Street Senior Center at 600 West Fifth Street and the Perris Hill Senior Center at 780 East 21st Street both serve weekday lunch from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm under the Older Californians Nutrition Program. Nearby pages cover Redlands, Fontana and Riverside, and the county page covers the High Desert and mountain towns.
