How to find an in-home caregiver in Mariposa County

Mariposa County has 16,846 residents by the Department of Finance's 2026 estimate and no incorporated city, so the people you might hire are spread across the town of Mariposa and small communities such as Coulterville, Greeley Hill, Catheys Valley, Hornitos and Midpines. A caregiver who already lives near your parent is easier to keep on a regular schedule than one who has to drive across the county for each visit. Name the community and the hours in your post.

The state's licensing file lists no home care agency based in the county, so most applicants will be independent caregivers or IHSS providers. If your parent qualifies for IHSS, the county's Public Authority can help you find a provider from its registry. English is the only home language for 89.4% of residents five and older. Profiles closest to the ZIP code you enter appear first on this page.

    Choosing well

    Evaluating caregivers in Mariposa County

Ask which credentials an applicant holds and check each one. An IHSS provider in Mariposa County has passed a Department of Justice background check and completed enrollment with the Public Authority; providers on its registry have also had references checked and finished a mandatory orientation. The Home Care Aide Registry covers aides employed by licensed agencies. Call at least two past employers, meet the strongest candidates with your parent present, and pay for one trial shift before agreeing to a schedule. CaregiverConnect does not check anyone's identity, history or references; any background report is for your family to arrange, with the applicant's written consent.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four numbers help you set a fair private wage. California's minimum is $16.90 an hour, and UC Berkeley's list shows no higher local rate in Mariposa County. BLS reports a $16.52 median for home health and personal care aides in the seven-county nonmetro area that includes Mariposa. IHSS pays Mariposa County providers $17.50. CareScout's 2025 survey puts agency home care at a $40 median hourly rate statewide, though no licensed agency is based in the county. If you employ a personal attendant directly, hours past nine in a day or 45 in a week are paid at one and a half times the rate. IHSS is for people eligible for Medi-Cal, so if your parent has Medi-Cal, call the county on 1-833-423-0816 before you budget; authorized hours may pay for part of the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

    Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Mariposa County: frequently asked questions

How do we apply for IHSS in Mariposa County?

Call the IHSS unit on 1-833-423-0816 or visit Health and Human Services at 5362 Lemee Lane. The county describes IHSS as a program for Medi-Cal eligible people who are over 65, blind or disabled, and CDSS says a Medi-Cal eligibility determination comes first. A social worker then decides which services and how many hours are authorized.

Can the county help us find an IHSS caregiver?

Yes. The IHSS Public Authority keeps a provider registry, and its registry coordinator works with recipients to find a good match and explains the duties of the recipient as employer of record.

Can I be paid to care for my own parent?

Yes, if your parent is approved for IHSS and hires you. You complete the online orientation, Live Scan fingerprints and an in-office appointment with your photo ID and original Social Security card, and return the linking paperwork the county provides. Mariposa County pays $17.50 an hour.

Is there assisted living in Mariposa County?

The state licensing file dated May 25, 2025 shows no open residential care home for the elderly in the county; the one listed, in Mariposa, is closed. For nursing care, John C. Fremont's 16-bed Ewing Wing takes residents from a wait list after a family screening questionnaire.

Who helps a worn-out family caregiver?

Valley Caregiver Resource Center serves Mariposa families on (800) 541-8614, and Area 12's Family Caregiver Support Program offers free help for those caring for someone 60 or older.

    Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers?

No. We do not look into anyone's identity, record or references, so that part is up to your family. Posting is free; Family Premium, at $24.99 a month, lets you message applicants and confirm a hire.
