How to find an in-home caregiver in Tuolumne County

Most households here are outside a city. Of the 54,233 people the Department of Finance counted in January 2026, only 5,280 live in Sonora, the county's single incorporated city. Outside town, the caregiver's drive shapes the job, so offer fewer, longer visits or mileage pay rather than an hour a day.

The agency market is small. In the May 2025 CDSS licensing file, Tuolumne County had two licensed home care organizations, both with Sonora addresses, and CDPH lists one home health agency and one hospice, both run by Adventist Health Home Care Services. Many families therefore hire a caregiver directly or use IHSS. The caregiver profiles on this page are ordered by how close they are to your ZIP and change whenever someone new signs up.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Tuolumne County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Tuolumne County

Check what applies to the person in front of you. An IHSS provider enrolls through Tuolumne County Social Services and attends the county's provider orientation. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH, so ask for the certificate number and verify it. Licensed agencies must register every aide they place; an independent caregiver can choose whether to register. Phone two former employers yourself, meet applicants in the home where they would work, and keep a family member nearby for the first paid shift. CaregiverConnect verifies nothing about applicants, including identity, licenses and criminal records. A background check is something you arrange and pay for, with the applicant's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where are you based, and how far is that from our road?
  • What did you do for a recent client coming home from Adventist Health Sonora or Golden Sonora Care Center?
  • Are you already an enrolled Tuolumne County IHSS provider, and have you attended the county orientation?
  • If my mother needs a Dial-A-Ride trip, can you book it the day before and ride along?
  • Does your auto policy cover you while you drive a client into Sonora?
  • My father is heavy. If he ended up on the floor, how would you get help?
  • Can you cover a longer shift on days when no one in the family is nearby?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Tuolumne County: hourly rates and schedules

Sonora and Jamestown. Early help with a wash, getting dressed and a first meal, a visit around supper for the meal and evening pills, and help getting to clinic appointments. After a hospital stay. Full days, or overnight cover, until the person is steady on their feet again. Groveland, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne and Twain Harte. A caregiver driving out here will usually prefer a few long shifts each week to a daily one-hour stop, because the drive eats into short visits.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four numbers help you set a rate. California's wage floor is $16.90, and UC Berkeley's Labor Center records no higher local rate for any Tuolumne County community. BLS put the May 2025 median for aides in its seven-county Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode area at $16.52. The county pays IHSS providers $17.90 an hour, and agency care statewide had a $40 hourly median (CareScout, 2025). When you yourself employ a personal attendant, you owe overtime for any time over 9 hours on one day or 45 across the week. When a parent has Medi-Cal, call IHSS early: the county wants proof of Medi-Cal eligibility plus a signed Health Care Certification, and approved hours can pay a caregiver your parent chooses.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Tuolumne County: frequently asked questions

How do we apply for IHSS in Tuolumne County?

Complete the county social services application and send it by mail or fax to IHSS at 20075 Cedar Road North, or phone 209-533-5711. A social worker then visits to assess. The county lists these conditions: California residency, being 60 or older, blind or disabled, a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, living at home, and a completed Health Care Certification form.

Can a relative be paid as the IHSS caregiver?

Yes. The county says a family member or friend may serve as the independent provider. The recipient counts as the employer, and the provider enrolls through Social Services and is paid $17.90 an hour for authorized hours.

What help is there if my parent is not on Medi-Cal?

Area 12 Agency on Aging offers free, temporary chore and personal care help for residents 60 and up, and Sierra Senior Providers delivers meals for a suggested $5 contribution. Neither depends on Medi-Cal.

Who can give a family caregiver a break?

Valley Caregiver Resource Center can subsidize in-home respite or day care for eligible families, and Area 12 includes respite in its Family Caregiver Support Program. Ask both; services are free to eligible caregivers.

Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers?

No. Vetting is up to each family; we perform no background, license or reference screening. Posting costs nothing; to message applicants and hire, families add Family Premium for $24.99 a month.

My father can no longer drive. How does he get to appointments?

Book Dial-A-Ride a day ahead on (209) 532-0404, ask Catholic Charities about non-emergency medical rides, or apply for Tuolumne TRIP, which reimburses mileage at the IRS rate when a friend or neighbor drives him.
