How to find an in-home caregiver in Sonora

Hiring in Sonora usually starts with one of three routes. You can employ a caregiver yourself, hire through an agency (state licensing data from May 2025 show two such agencies countywide, both at Sonora addresses), or, when your parent is on Medi-Cal, request IHSS so the county pays for authorized hours. For skilled care at home after an illness, such as wound care or therapy ordered by a doctor, the home health agency is Adventist Health Home Care Services on Cedar Road North, which also runs the county's only licensed hospice.

Many older Sonora residents live alone: ACS 2020–2024 finds that women 65 or older living by themselves make up 15.6% of the city's households. If that describes your parent, say in the post how many hours a day they are on their own and which tasks cannot wait. Mention whether the caregiver will drive to appointments on Greenley Road or Mono Way. Most residents speak English at home; only 2.5% speak Spanish, so state a language need plainly if you have one. The caregiver list above changes as people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Sonora

Start with paperwork. Any aide an agency sends should already be a registered home care aide with the state. Ask an IHSS provider when they enrolled with the county and completed its orientation. Ask a nursing assistant for the CDPH certificate number and check it. For anyone you hire directly, call two past employers, hold the interview in the home, and ask a relative to be present for the first paid visit. CaregiverConnect performs no checks on identity, credentials or criminal history. Background reports are your call: you buy one, and only with the applicant's written agreement.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Do you live in Sonora, and how would you reach us if your car was in the shop?
  • Have you helped a client in the weeks after a discharge from Adventist Health Sonora?
  • Could you drive my mother to the Greenley Road senior center for lunch and keep her company there?
  • Do you already hold a Tuolumne County IHSS provider number? If not, would you get one?
  • What do you say when a client turns down a shower or a pill?
  • My father is alone most of the day. What would you do to keep tabs on him between your visits?
  • Do you have experience with a client on hospice?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Sonora: hourly rates and schedules

Sonora families commonly ask for a morning visit of two to three hours for bathing, dressing and breakfast; a midday trip to the senior center lunch; an evening check for supper and pills; and full days after a hospital stay. A caregiver who lives in or near the city spends less of the visit on the road, so short daily visits are easier to fill here than in the outlying communities. Put any weekend or overnight need at the top of the post.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's tracker lists no Sonora wage ordinance, so a caregiver on your payroll must earn at least the state's $16.90. Tuolumne County pays IHSS providers $17.90, BLS reported a $16.52 median for aides across the region in May 2025, and CareScout's 2025 survey set California's agency median at $40 hourly; ask each Sonora agency for its own rate. California's domestic worker rules entitle a privately hired personal attendant to overtime pay for any hours beyond the ninth in a day and the forty-fifth in a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Sonora: frequently asked questions

Are there home care agencies in Sonora?

Two licensed home care organizations appear for Tuolumne County in the May 2025 CDSS file, both in Sonora: Comfort Keepers on Mono Way and TLC Assistant Living Services. A third Sonora agency in the file is marked closed.

Is there a home health agency or hospice in Sonora?

Yes, one of each, and both belong to Adventist Health Home Care Services at 20100 Cedar Road North (CDPH). Home health is for skilled care a doctor orders; for everyday help with bathing, meals and housework, families hire a caregiver.

How do I start IHSS for a parent who lives in Sonora?

Phone 209-533-5711 or post the application to the county IHSS office on Cedar Road North (number 20075). The county needs a decision on Medi-Cal eligibility and a completed Health Care Certification form, and a social worker will visit the house.

Where can my mother eat lunch with other people?

The Sonora Senior Center at 540 Greenley Road serves lunch at noon on weekdays to anyone 60 or older for a suggested $5. A caregiver can take her and stay, which breaks up a long day.

What does it cost to find a caregiver here?

Posting is free and caregivers can apply at no cost. Family Premium ($24.99 per month) adds messaging and lets you confirm a hire. No commission is charged, and caregiver screening is not something we do, so references are yours to check.
