Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Tuolumne County
Tuolumne County has one incorporated city. The Department of Finance counted 54,233 residents on January 1, 2026, of whom 5,280 live in Sonora and 48,953 in unincorporated communities, so about nine residents in ten live outside any city limit. The offices a caregiver needs most sit along Cedar Road North: Social Services, which runs IHSS, is at 20075, and Adult Protective Services takes reports in person at 20111.
Distance is the main cost of the work. In ACS 2020–2024, three in four county workers (74.9%) drove to work alone, the average trip took 30.0 minutes, and the survey found almost no one commuting by bus. A strong profile names the ZIP codes you will drive to, says if you are willing to drive a client to Sonora appointments, and lists your days. Spanish is the home language of 4.6% of residents over age four, so list it if you speak it.

Caregiver pay in Tuolumne County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Tuolumne and six other counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Tuolumne and six other counties) | $16.52 median ($17.48 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 2,220 jobs; concentration 1.27× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Tuolumne County | $17.90 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, Eastern Sierra-Mother Lode Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Tuolumne and six other counties) | $22.79 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
BLS publishes no separate wage table for Tuolumne. Its May 2025 survey pools the county with six others (Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Inyo, Mariposa and Mono); across that region the 2,220 workers coded as home health or personal care aides had hourly pay with a $16.52 midpoint and a $17.48 average, while the median for nursing assistants was $22.79. CDSS sets the Tuolumne County IHSS wage at $17.90 from January 1, 2026, exactly one dollar over the $16.90 state minimum, and UC Berkeley's ordinance tracker shows no Tuolumne town or county wage above it. If a household is your direct employer and you work as its personal attendant, overtime pay begins after the ninth hour in a day or the 45th hour in a week.
About 5.4% of Tuolumne County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, close to California's 5.3%; the monthly county rate moved between 4.8% and 5.8%. Inside the county the picture splits: Sonora averaged 8.3%, while EDD's estimate for Jamestown was 3.0%, though figures for an unincorporated place like Jamestown are built from county totals and are approximate. Where a city's jobless rate runs that high, paid hours caring for a relative or neighbor through Tuolumne County IHSS are steady work that stays local.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Tuolumne County
No state license is needed for private, non-medical home care in Tuolumne County. The $35 Home Care Aide Registry binds agency staff only; an agency job brings that requirement with it. Under IHSS, the county Department of Social Services handles provider enrollment, although the client you work for is legally your employer. The county asks every new independent provider to attend an IHSS provider orientation, and provider questions go to 209-533-7352. Paper timesheets go to the state processing facility in Chico; the Electronic Timesheet System is the alternative. The county lists IHSS providers among the people the law requires to report suspected abuse of elders or dependent adults: phone APS on 209-533-5717, then send the SOC 341 form within two days. The state rules are summarized in California caregiver requirements.
