Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Benito County

The Department of Finance's count for January 1, 2026 is 68,111 people in San Benito County. Almost two thirds of them, 44,233, live in Hollister, which the city describes as the county seat. San Juan Bautista, the only other incorporated city, has 2,081 people, and the remaining 21,797 live on unincorporated land. IHSS, the Public Authority, Adult Protective Services and the job center all share one Health and Human Services Agency address on San Felipe Road in Hollister.

That makes the county easy to learn but not always easy to cover. Most clients are in or near Hollister, while homes past Tres Pinos, where the county Dial-A-Ride zone ends, can mean long unpaid drives between visits. In the 2020–2024 American Community Survey, 73.3% of employed residents commuted alone by car, only 0.8% rode a bus or train, and a typical trip to work took 36.6 minutes. If your current job means a long daily drive, a care client close to home can give some of that time back. Spanish is spoken at home by 40.3% of residents aged five and older, and 15.7% speak Spanish with limited English, so bilingual caregivers should list both languages first.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Benito County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties)$18.09 median ($18.92 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 49,610 jobs; concentration 1.58× national
IHSS provider wage, San Benito County$19.35CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties)$27.33 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

BLS publishes no wage table for San Benito County alone. Instead the county is folded into the San Jose metro area, where BLS found 49,610 aide jobs in May 2025, most of them in Santa Clara County, paying an $18.09 median and an $18.92 mean. San Benito County pays IHSS providers $19.35 an hour from January 1, 2026, above both the metro median and the $16.90 state minimum. That state figure is the floor in Hollister, San Juan Bautista and unincorporated areas alike; none of the three has its own wage ordinance in UC Berkeley's Labor Center list. Nursing assistants in the metro earned a $27.33 median, a reason to weigh CNA training. If a household employs you itself, state domestic worker law requires the overtime rate for anything over nine hours in a day or 45 in a week.

EDD estimates that about 6.4% of San Benito County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, against California's 5.3%. With joblessness above the state rate, IHSS hours for a relative or neighbor give a steady paycheck close to home. The San Benito County IHSS guide walks through enrollment.

How to enroll as a provider in San Benito County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Benito County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Benito County

Non-medical care paid for directly by a family needs no California license; the $35 Home Care Aide Registry becomes compulsory the day a licensed home care organization hires you. San Benito County runs IHSS from its Children and Adult Services division at 1111 San Felipe Road, Suite 205, in Hollister, weekdays 8 to 5, phone (831) 636-4190. To become a paid provider through the county's Public Authority registry, call (831) 634-0784; its flyer lists a registry application, a provider orientation and a background check. Skilled nursing employers will want to see your CDPH nurse assistant certification. Paid caregivers are also mandated reporters, so if you believe a client 65 or older, or a dependent adult, is being mistreated, you must tell APS. More detail: California caregiver rules.
